The Muddy Buddy Experience
A Look At The Whacky, Mud- and Fun- Filled Event

The celebration in the Red Hook beer-garden of Muddy Buddy in San Dimas

Bookmark and Share

In the world of wacky, crazy – and fun – events, it's right up there with Bay to Breakers, the costumed Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10K and even those wife-carrying contests where the winner wins the weight of his wife in beer.

This one involves a bit of physical exertion that culminates with an ending that, despite the competitors' finishing time (good or bad), everyone winds up with mud on their face.

Some people pay top dollar for mud baths; here it's part of the event.

It's the Muddy Buddy (Nov. 6 in 2011), a combined six-mile bike ride and run – with obstacles – through outdoor terrain with a partner and a finish line that is unlike any other finish. That's because it's mud.

A pit of mud, actually, that requires crawling on hands and knees (or, for the more adventurous entrants, sliding) under flags. If Mike Rowe were looking for dirty activities, and not just dirty jobs for his Dirty Jobs TV show, then he would certainly be at this event.

It's as nuts as it seems.

And not just because of the mud. There is a costume contest. And a beer garden.

Of course, there is a beer garden.

Without question, the most fun part – and the real point of getting muddy at 8:30 on a Sunday morning – of Muddy Buddy takes place in the Red Hook beer garden.

This is where competitors who have finished celebrate with tasty beers and gather to give a hard time to those who are just getting to get muddy.

The Red Hook beer garden is strategically placed adjacent to the mud pit. And it is from here that people cheer and jeer as others begin their mud crawl. Those who go deep are soundly applauded. Those who lift the ropes in an attempt to stay somewhat clean are subjected to boos and "go back" chants. And if any mud wrestling breaks out – not an uncommon occurrence – then it's like being in that bar scene in Stripes (without the brawl and MPs.)

It's not difficult to see where the event gets its name.

As the morning wears on, the size of the beer garden swells with muddy finishers. So it's advisable to finish as soon as possible in order to avoid the good-natured but increasingly loud scrutiny of one's mud-crawling form.

This, folks, is a party. And like all these off-center events, there is great camaraderie among everyone, be it participant or spectator. The Muddy Buddy is about beers with buddies, both with those already established and those just getting established as a result of the event.

Started by Bob Babbitt – who wears a frog costume on event days – more than 10 year ago, Muddy Buddy gets about 2,000 competitors per event. Spectators are welcome, too. The beer garden is also open to the public, though it's easy to feel out place in clean clothes when everyone else is caked in mud.

Before the mud, there's running and biking with a not-yet muddy buddy.

There are 18 Colombia Muddy Buddy events and they are held from May-November throughout the United States. PubClub.com was at the Muddy Buddy in Los Angeles, held at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas. It's always the first of November. Occasionally it's the day after Halloween, which makes not only for some interesting costumes (did some really bother to change from a party the previous night!?) but also some shaky competitors.

Sponsored by Columbia sportswear and Red Hook, Muddy Buddy also has a charity. With the help of Land Rover, it has raised $100,000 in support of the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

The event's official websites is MuddyBuddy.com

For those who choose to hose down, here's a "shower" station.
