Put on the board shorts or bikini, load the surfboards into the Woody, get the Beach Boys onto the iPod and head to the Malibu coastline.

The Bud Light Malibu Surf and Sports Festival is a fun, fun, fun event. But daddy won't take the T-bird away because he's probably here! It's fun for competitors, fun for friends and, with quality competition on the beach followed by a party on the pier, fun for fans.

PubClub video hosted by PubClubette Rose Arzate.

Held one day each June – the 2009 event was June 20 – it is the essense of Southern California sports. It involves ocean-oriented competitions commonplace to this area but foreign to many other locations. Surfing, paddleboarding, lifeguard rescue, beach volleyball and even surfboard water polo are all on the all-day agenda. Where else could one see surfboard water polo?

This day at the beach in Malibu provides fun for all everyone.

As the title implies, the event is sponsored by Bud Light, which supports these type of events up and down the California coast. Bud Light also hosts a party on the world famous Malibu Pier to celebrate the day's activiites with food, music, a movie and, of course, plenty of ice-cold product.

All activities are open to the public and all are free. That's another aspect of this area; Californians feel the beach should be enjoyed by everyone and they love to expose their unique events to as many people as possible.

Nothing beats a cold one after a fun day at the beach.

The day begins nine miles north of Malibu at Zuma Beach, whre more than a dozen competitions take place from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. The highlight is the Waternam's Race, an 8.5-mile paddleboard event that ends at the Malibu Pier; some 50 competitors participate in what is the Surf and Sports Festival's signature event.

PubClubette Rose Arzate wants a Bud Light!

It then relocates to just north of the Malibu Pier, where the famous right break attracts surfers from all over California on a daily basis. For this event, long, slow rides with the pier in the background are jprized waves. Seeking style points from the judges, competitors walk up and down the board during the ride, providing a live demonstration of the terms "hang five" and "hang 10."

Malibu is picture perfect host for competitors and spectators.

It's like living in one of those '60's surf movies. Beach Blanket Bingo brought to life. The fact it concludes with Buds on the Pier just makes it that much more engaging because THAT is the beach life in California in a snapshot – a day full of beach activity followed by good beers with good new and old friends at sunset and beyond.

It also involves the California Surf Lifesaving Association and the California Beach Volleyball Association.
