Concerts at the Pier Hermosa Beach
Free Beach Music on the Beach

It's a summertime sand party for three Sundays in Hermosa Beach.

On three Sundays each summer, the city of Hermosa Beach throws a party on it's most treasured asset – its sand.

Called the Sunset Concert, it features popular bands playing on a stage with the Pier as the backdrop. There's even a warm-up band before the main show. It starts at 6 p.m., and ends to a brilliant sunset – almost as if nature is suppllying the final applause – at approximaely 8 p.m.

Beach chairs and blankets make it a picnic on the sand.

Residents of Hermosa and the neighboring cities of Manhattan and Redondo treat it like a picnic. They bring beach charis and towels to sit on the sand and stake out an era with, well, steak, chicken, cheese and crackers, and all manner of food and snacks.

It's family style, with music by groups like the Drifters and Temptations (or what's left of them) playing beach and surf music, which is ideal for this community on the Southern California shore.

Yet this is also a town of several young and single people and for them it's an open-air social party. They bring beverages to compliment their food and spend the time talking, using the music as a pleasant background soundtrack.

Afterward, they hit bars like Sharkeez and Fenner's and make a night of it.

• July 20 – Michael Sullivan Band followed by The Hodads
• July 27 – Michael Sullivan Band followed by Carlos the Tribute (Tribute to Carlos Santana)
