Surf Festival/6-Man
Volleyball 2008
The 2008 Manhattan Beach Surfest – or 6-man, as many call it – is in the record books, memory banks and photo digital camera memory sticks. And when the sand cleared, the Smack Sportwear-sponsored Magnum P.I. team prevailed to be Kings of the Beach. There to witness it courtside were the PubClubettes, cheerleaders to the champions.
It was the biggest Surfest/6-man of all time, with more than 20,000 people playing and partying all day at the Manhattan Beach Pier on Saturday, Aug. 2. The following day, several thousand lined the courts as the tallest timbers of men and women showed great athletic ability and competitive spirit in an amazing display of skill.
The event, for those not in the know, is a combination of Halloween and beach volleyball. More than 600 teams dress in costumes ranging from commandos to bikini bunnies in a fun-filled "sporting" event that is more spirited than sporting. Each has a tent filled with adult beverages, as the entire point is to maximize the fun opportunities the event presents. And what fun! Tens of thousands lined the beach in 2008, and by all all accounts this was the biggest of them all. Even on Sunday, when the massive crowds generally move onto other things and many of the team tents are vacated as only the best teams remain in the tournament, some 5,000 people line the courts and along the Strand to watch the action.
PubClub was there in 2008 with the PubClubettes cheering on the winning Magnum P.I. team, not only the best team on the beach but the most fun. Now, how does that theme song go again??? - Surfest/6-man 2008 Photos -
