What To Do In Sydney
Visitors can be
one of the "human ants" scaling the top of the Harbour Bridge.
True Aussies say the best activity in
Sydney is to visit the pubs. Still, there's more to do here than enjoying
a good beer.
With such good weather, outdoor activities are a must Sports are huge
here. Australians really love their golf, tennis and motor racing. Keg-tossing
is a popular beach activity, but that has more to do with drinking than
any real sporting value, so we'll move onto other things.
Okay, we know you are going to do it, so here's the scoop on the Sydney
Opera House. First, it's not really an opera house. It hosts ballets,
classical concerts, plays, and of course operas in its five halls, the
biggest of which seats 3,000. Live music lovers should put this high
on their to-do list. Tours, costing $12.90, run from 9:15 a.m.-4 p.m.
More adventurous travelers can climb the Harbour Bridge. People
have been doing it for year, but it only became legal in 1998. Now,
for $100 dollars, anyone brave and physically fit enough can span the
catwalk high above the road. It's a three hour adventure that includes
being breathalysed so make sure you are sober enough to climb.
A totally fun thing to do is go to the fish markets at the end
of the Light Rail and witness the auctions that happen every day. It's
more fun, though, to sample the freshest seafood you will ever taste.
Oysters by the dozen for only $6. Fresh fish cooked before your eyes,
a kilo of fresh prawns (don't call them shrimp!!!) or even fresh Chili
Mud Crab (tastes much better than it sounds). Take a kilo or two of
prawns outside by the water, grab a six pack of King Browns from the
Liquor store inside (cheapest King Browns in town) and sit there and
eat and drink to your heart is content. Mate, it just doesn't get any
better than that on a warm Sydney afternoon.
For those more inclined to explore, you can take the Explorer Bus
all over Sydney. The red one cover the inner city area and the blue
one takes in Bondi and the other beaches. You can get on and off as
often and for as long as you like. You just hail the next Explorer Bus
that comes along.Three-day passes are available.
Sydney also has great museums, both art and artifact. There
are art galleries, churches and cathedrals, and some fabulous live theater.
Yes, it is possible to be quite cultural "Down Under".
Shopping is also high on the list for most travelers, and it's
available here in abundance. We all know that we have little enough
room in our bags so lets jam a bit more in there!! You know you will
learn to play that Didjeridoo one day when you get home!!!
Australians love their sports. Golf is huge (thank you Greg
Norman) and unlike in many other places, its not expensive and finding
a course is as easy as finding a pub.
In winter there is Aussie Rules Footy and Rugby, both Union
and League. You might even find the odd match of the World game,
soccer. For an Aussie, there's nothing like mixing it up at a good
club game and then getting on to the booze afterward.
Summer brings cricket, that weird game that is like a five-day
baseball game on Valium. It takes five days to play and only last four
innings. For those on a quicker time schedule, there is also the One
Day version which runs about eight hours and each side gets one inning.
This usually starts around 2 p.m. and runs til 10 at night.
Australians also love their water sports. Or to put it more precisely,
visiting the beach. Hitting the beach in summer is as natural
for an Aussie as breathing (85% of Australia's population live on or
near the coast) Lying on your back, checking out the "White Pointers"
all around is a fabulous way to spend an afternoon.
Whatever you have the urge to do, Sydney will provide a place to do
it!!
