They top off the event like a bartender adding Grand Mariner to a Cadillac margarita.
They provide as least as much entertainment as the horses and jockeys and take creativity to a whole new level.

They are the ladies and even gentlemen who show up at Del Mar Race Track in their Kentucky Derby hats, who make Opening Day a real Southern California happening. Opening Day in 2012 is July 18.
One girl made her hat from a deck of cards, another had a full-body jockey-horse combination, a gorgeous gal named Mercedes (right) looked stunning in her red flowered dress and hat and even men got into the act, a dude combining a horse head with a surfboard in a huge hat that took two hands to balance.
Del Mar rewards people's participation with a hat contest. Always at 3:05 on Opening Day, there is a parade of hats around a circle just inside the GA gates (and by a margarita stand) in which anyone can walk up and talk to people and snap photos.
The winner of the contest gets a two round-trip domestic tickets on American Airlines.
This article salutes those who go to the effort of making wild, creative and incredible hats for Del Mar with this photo essay.
