Within sight of Mexico – a song appropriately performed - Jimmy Buffett began his 2003 California trio tour with the traditional stop in San Diego on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

This was no desert island on an ancient chart. Some 20,000 Parrotheads packed the amphitheater which is within a tequila shot of Tijuana in Chula Vista. Jimmy welcomed them with fire dancers, tiki torches and tunes. "Knees of My Heart," "Schoolboy Heart," "A Pirate Looks at 40," "Everybody's Talking," "Margaritaville" and "Fins" (as the first encore in a new twist) were among the songs. A highlight came right after intermission when Jimmy and Mac McAnally sat alone on stage strumming their six strings to "This Hotel Room," a quirky, somewhat obscure tune from the long-ago "Havana Daydreaming" album.

Jimmy was typical Buffett – no shoes, laughing and joking. He wore tie-dye shorts as a tribute to friend and former NBA star Bill Walton, a noted Grateful Dead deadhead who was in the front row.

San Diego is quickly gaining a reputation for Parrothead partying rivaling that of Irvine Meadows an hour up the freeway. In a way, it's even better because it's less of a total frenzy and the people are truly fans of "the Man," not a mix of Parrotheads and Spring Break seekers. The venue is modern and it's not a half-mile hike through the woods to reach the seats. Parking is free, the lot opens early – shortly past noon – and they wisely let vehicles stay overnight so those boat drink-powered sons of sons of sailors can stay one step ahead of the jailer. This makes San Diego a mecca for motorhomes.

Thought it wasn't quite a ragtop day, the weather was there and the people were definitely beautiful. Even though it was a Tuesday, the parking lot was packed by 4 p.m.

The centerpiece of activity was in the back corner of the side paved area. Some clever Parrotheads erected a small stage with a roulette wheel of provocative drinking proposals. Called the Fin Spin, it always seemed to result in a girl having to show her breasts.

Okay, be sure and look to the left of the Fin Spin to read the signs.

This was adjacent to the Parrothead Bar and Grill – free shots! – and one of the dozens of portable tiki bars. A group of girls in grass skirts skirted through all the madness on a golf cart, a lifeguard stand on the sand offered shots with a blow-up dollie and a realistic replica of a pirate ship had tossed out its anchor.

The latter made for a great photo op when PubClubber Gary discovered this treasure; he was dressed as a pirate identical to the lead character in "Pirates of the Caribbean."

By the next morning, the pleasure was worth the pain from too much tequila (or rum, or beer, or shots). So, looking for a place to go when volcano blows we definitely won't mind landing in San Diego!

Pirate Gary tossed our his anchor at this ship until...

....he went for younger women and got drunk uptown with The Bartender (below).

Waiting for some mystery man, Havana Daydreaming for a shot.

Surprise, it's a tiki bar!

Life's a beach in San Diego and especially at Buffett.

What's a Buffett show without shark fins on a motorhome?
