Jimmy Buffett Irvine Meadows LA 09 Show!
You Had to Be There – And We Were!

This high-powered blender and babe mixes margaritas for the Parrotheads.

Jimmy Buffett returned to Irvine Meadows on May 21, 2009, and while it was a Thursday (denying the the LA and Orange County Parrotheads the full-fever, all-day tailgating of the usual Saturday show), the fins were still up and out in force.

Apparently, they had "A Lot to Drink About," because the parking lot was in full frenzy before 5 o'clock anywhere, and tiki bars were pouring frozen concoctions until Jimmy took the stage around 8 p.m.

PubClub.com was there, leading a group from the Manhattan-Hermosa Beach area aboard a party bus. Irvine Meadows – well, actually Verrizon Amphitheater as it's now called – has a huge parking area that is ideal for Buffett tailgating. And people poured into it like margaritas into a parrot-styled cup. It would not be a stretch, either, to point out that Buffett at Irvine Meadows brings out the most beautiful girls of any show in the land.

One thing about Irvine Meadows – it brings out the most beautiful babes.

There was a live band at one RV, karaoke at another and a high-powered blender on a motorcycle seat that was a center of attention. Plus the thousands of Parrotheads in grass skirts, leis, Hawaiian shirts, Mardi Gras beads and funky hats. The Irvine Police Department was on the scene but they were all smiles as usual, no doubt wishing they were off duty so they could participate in the controlled madness. These photos and video are proof of the party!

This venue has a well-deserved reputation has having a surly security staff, but at the entrance people proceeded in with minimal delays and for the first half of the show Parrotheads were partying and dancing in the aisles. It was as carefree as the shows in Hawaii. For this venue, it was unheard of and, of course, it couldn't last. After intermission, anyone not in a seat was sent to one.

Oddest part of the show? Easy. Jimmy played "Yellow Submarine" as one of the encores. Perhaps it was just to see if everyone was still paying attention.

Irvine Meadows continues to have its issues. Walking into the arena is a pain because everyone is funneled into one single area creating a huge bottleneck – who designed this, Caltrans!? – it's at least a 15-minute journey to the seats and bathrooms and concession areas are only at the sides of the venue, making for lines and a long walk from the center.

"Best parking lots, worst venue," was a common comment.

But hey, it's Buffett. And Jimmy Buffett concerts are The World's Greatest Single-Day Party.
