Where the heck is Margaritaville?
For one weekend in September, it was in the place where Ted Williams
showed off his smooth stroke, where a man named Yaz became a cultural
hero, where Carlton Fisk willed a home run ball fair in the 1975 World
Series.
Jimmy Buffett played Fenway Park, a legendary leader of lost souls
at one of baseball's most legendary ballparks.
The
stage was set up in centerfield, pressed up against the famouse Green
Monster, the huge outfield wall that is as famous as the people who
have played here. Approximately 70,000 fans packed the stands and lined
the outfield the infield was not in play and roared as
he localized his show with things such as playing "Take Me Out
To The Ballgame" and trying to rid the Red Sox Curse.
Buffett also played an interesting intro to "Purple Rain,"
which he merged into "Let's Get Drunk," switched over to Neil
Diamon's "Sweet Caroline" and wrapped it up with an ending
to "Let's Get Drunk." Songs from the new "License to
Chill" were few, among them the title song and "Coast of Carolina."

He also played "One Particular Habor," "Volcano,"
Boston-born "Boat Drinks," Changes in Lattitudes," "The
Weather Is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful," Schoolboy Heart,""Come
Monday," "A Pirate Looks at 40," "Margaritaville"
and the new national anthem, "It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere" The
encore was "Fins," and to see 50,000 people moving their fins
from the left to the right was quite a site.
For Sunday's show which began in daylight at 6 p.m. he
made a few changes, including playing "Fruitcakes."
While many locals complained beforehand not being able to tailgate
and having to wait in lines at a couple of the bars, once the show began
it was pretty much forgotten. Fenway was a good ol' host, its scoreboard
showing "Jimmy Buffett" instead of a score or even opposing
team, the Green Monster standing tall next to the stage and proud Boston-area
Parrotheads everywhere. Sunday's pre- and post-parties were not as intense
as Friday but the show seemed a bit more relaxed (maybe it was the start
time).
Beers were $7 inside (for the good stuff), beer lines were long but
not for the bathrooms and there were plenty of tickets available outside
the stadium beforhand.
No tailgate? No problem. Fenway is surrounded by bars and Parrotheads
will party before, during and after shows. However, Landsdown Street
should have been shut down and stocked with stations serving beers,
boat drinks and margaritas. We understand the mayor tried to get this
accomplished but could not because of some arcane laws. Hey, make an
exception!

It's his job: When
the stage is set and the lights go on...

Phins Up: And to
the right and the left!

The Parrotheads
found places to preparty; here at the Tiki bar.

After the Sunday
night show Parrotheads packed Landsdown Street.
