Surf Festival/6-Man
Volleyball 2010
The party was on! Just not on the beach, as it has been in the past. Instead, Surfest/6-man 2010 was a party all around the beach. In the bars of Manhattan Beach, CA, along the Strand and especially at the houses around the pier.
The crackdown on alcohol at the event had an expected result: People come to this event to party and if they can't do it on the sand, they will do it elsewhere. "If we can't drink on the beach, we might as well stay here and drink," said some girls at an area bar.
And so it was, with the result being crowded bars from before noon thru past midnight. But the real party could be found at houses on and near the Strand. Where the no-alcohol policy on the beach had its biggest effect was in creating house parties by the event. And this could very well lead to a revival of the once-robust Manhattan Beach house parties.
At the event, barricades were erected to create checkpoints. And people were checked – not only backpacks but in at least one case, a the glasses case in a backpack. Because of this, there was a line to get onto the beach (not a long one, a few minutes wait at most).
And most people were cool with it. There was no reduction in crowd; it simply dispersed through different parts of downtown. And at no point were people elbow-to-elbow on the court, so the new policy did achieve its intended affect of creating more space on the sand.
As far as drinks on the sand, cans of Monster energy drink, which were given out at one of the entrances, were a much more common site than plastic red cups. On Sunday, the barricades were still in place, but by the semifinals security was present but not prevalent. A large crowd gathered on the sand and Strand for the finals, which saw Team Magnum P.I. win its third 6-man in a row. It did so in dramatic fashion, trailing 11-5 before making a mad rally to win in overtime, 16-14. So the party was on for 2010. It just moved from on the beach to by by the beach.
And On Sunday...
