The pace of Amsterdam if electrifying. The options of its nightlife
are so dazzling it's not unusual to catch yourself standing wide-eyed
on a street corner contemplating your next move while others race by
you with breakneck precision.
Hint: Just move forward. In this city, you can hardly go wrong. Soon,
you will be caught up in a blur of singing, dancing and bar-hopping
that doesn't end until you run out of guilders.
In Amsterdam, you can get stoned in corner coffee houses, drink Heinekens
until daybreak and have an intimate -- albeit brief -- love affair for
the price of a cheap sweatshirt. There are hundreds of bars, clubs,
pubs and coffee houses, many within steps of one another.
This is a city where it's acceptable to get stoned and impossible not
to get tipsy. Such frivolity does not come cheap, however. While prices
for individual items are not all that unreasonable, the sheer volume
of activity makes the guilders disappear faster than a cold Heineken.
The fun those guilders provide, however, is priceless.
