The locals call him "Rosie" but he's hardly a sissy.

In fact, Sean Rosenthal is now a Manhattan Beach Open champion.

Teaming with Jack Gibb, he thrilled the "Rosie's Raiders" fan club by winning the 2009 AVP Crocs Slam Bud Light Manhattan Beach Open, 21-17, 23-21, over Matt Olson and former Manhattan champ Kevin Wong.

On the women's side, Beijing Olympians Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs took the coveted title.

Manhattan Beach's culture revolves around beach volleyball and this is the city's premier event. It's also the second-biggest party event of the year, second only to the whacky Surfest/6-man, which is also a beach volleyball event that takes place Aug. 1-2.

PubClub.com is providing updates from the Pier:

What a party! After the game, people went to the beachside bars on the Manhattan Pier – including the AVP Dance Team – then hit Sangria in neighboring Hermosa Beach for a rocking afer party Gibb and Rosie got being the bar to pour drink and people danced and drank.

After all, winning Manhattan deserves such celebration.
The Sunday night victory party is a celebaratin of the MB title.

The granstands were full for the men's and women's finals; people got their spot for the former and stayed for the later...Then again, some peferred the comfort of Shellback nd Beaches, where the could have some cold Bud Lights rather than sweat it out on the sand...

Refreshment was not far away from the MB sand..

In fact, as a nod to the 6-man, four teams – including defending champion Team Smack (dressed as Magnum PI) and Team Fletch (dressed as the Lakers) – did a demo on Sunday. In what could be considered an upset (or a preview of things to come on Aug. 1-2), Team Danny Kinda defeated Team Memphis.

Both AVP finals featured diving and trying for every ball, players showing the all-out effort that defines play in the Manhattan Open. Wong, a past MB Open champion, and Olson arrived in the finals with a dramatic, three-set win over Olympic Gold Medalists Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser.

Later in the day, with stands barely sitting-room-only, Rosie and Gibb were "on" as it's often said in sport parlance. Every time Wong and Olson displayed the kinds of shots that got them to the finals, Rosie would come up with a thundering smash or Gibb a point-producing block. It was obvious from mid-point in the first game that Rosie and Gibb were going to win and when it happened, the group of locals in courtside seats called "Rosie's Raiders" celebrated like it was the Fourth of July.

The womens's and men's finals were televised locally by KTLA TV-5.

The 2009 Bud Light Manhattan Beach Open is the 48th installment of the event for the men and 29th for the women. No wonder it's called it the “Granddaddy."
