Denver Grand Prix Party Guide

It's Denver's newest sporting event, a three-day street party on the edge of Lower Downtown that involves the high-speed race cars of the Champ Car World Series and a full weekend of entertainment. The Centrix Grand Prix of Denver has sports at high speeds and entertainment with excitement around the Pepsi Center.

The first two years, the Labor Day event was the same weekend as the Taste of Colorado, the Colorado-CSU football game and the final Broncos preseason tilt. This year's event is mid-August but frankly, PubClub likes all the other action around town because it makes downtown Denver one of the country's top party places.

The party atmosphere beings on Thursday night with a free street party. It begins with the Rocky Mountain Concours Presented by Bridgestone at 3 p.m., when more than 75 classic cars line the historic square in a display of American automotive history. Awards will begin at 5.

At 7, the Champ Car Street Party gets plugged in with a free concert by Donavon Frankenreiter. The concert is free to the public and will be two hours long. In addition to the concert there will be a Champ Car showcar on display, the Johnsonville Brats Worldıs Largest Grill, food and drink vendor booths, and drivers signing autographs.

Saturday afternoon, a free (well, sort of) concert is held at Universal Landing Pavillion. In the past, Sugar Ray, Train and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band have played to huge, enthusiastic crowds.

The local celebrities sure like the event. Broncos QB Jake "The Snake" Plummer visited driver Adrian Fernandez in 2003. After receiving a pace car ride in a retro Ford pickup from Adrian, Jake emerged a bit shaken but wearing a huge smile. "That was something else!," he said.

Other Broncos also make it a point to attend, as do members of the NHL's Colorado Avalance. The mayor was the 2003 Grand Marshall.

Grand Prix ticket prices range from $25 for a Friday/Saturday general admission ticket (no reserved seat) to $105 for a three-day ticket that includes Saturday and Sunday reserved seating in upper levels of the grandstands. A GA ticket for Saturday including the concert is $31. A Champ Car paddock pass is $40. Oddly, officials reconfigured the 2004 track the first of August, moving the start/finish line.

Locals loved the inaugural Shell Grand Prix of Denver, which included a free Pioneer-sponsored concert by Train on Saturday. The Nitty Gritty Dirt band performed in 2003.
