The Best Time Ever!

Rome For A Weekend

PubClub's Amsterdam City & Bar Guide

By Amy Jones, Cal State-Fullerton Senior

Hey from Amsterdam!

FRIDAY: Before the sun even thought about getting up my friend and I were awake from our home base in London and preparing to leave for the Netherlands.

We had to be at a tube station at 6am, so we had to leave at 5:15. We got there and boarded a coach that would be our home for the next day. We drove through the English countryside and then boarded a ferry that crossed the English Channel. That was cool. Then we drove through France, Belgium, and into the Netherlands. We arrived at our hotel at 6:30pm and then set out to tour the city.

Amsterdam is beautiful!!!The canals make the city glow. We saw the Centraal Station, Anne Frank's house and the parks and museums. The tour finally ended at the Red Light District, where we walked through and saw all of the girls. It was so sad!!! These girls were actually in the windows, flashing their bodies and waiting for guys to pay to have sex with them.

SATURDAY: Rise and shine early!!! We left the hotel at 9am and headed to a fishing village called Volendam. It was rainy, so not all that interesting but none the the less I could see where it would be pretty in the summer time. Then we went to a cheese and clog factory and toured it. That was cool. This guy actually showed us how to make clogs and we got to try them on and take pictures.

Then we learned about how they make all of the different types of cheeses and got to taste them. We headed back into the city and had another little bus tour and then I took a canal tour. That was brilliant because you get to see all of the sights by water. After the canal tour we went to the Heineken Experience, which is an old Heineken Brewery that has been turned into a tour. It was really neat. It explained how they make the beer and has rides like you are the actual bottle and stuff like that. The ticket price also entitles you to three Heinekens in two different bars at the Experience, so that was cool. At the end they also give you a free glass. By the way, Heineken is huge out here. You can not go more than 10 feet without seeing another Heineken sign.

After that it was 6pm so we got some grub at a local kabaab shop. Kabaab shops are huge out here as well. It is like a Del Taco for us. They are always open, fairly cheap, and have good food. At night we went to a bar called the Bulldog. It was a great place because it was like a bar/club and was free to get in. That was a fun time for sure!!!

Some of the beautiful canals in Brugge, Belgium.

SUNDAY-BRUGGE

Again, we left bright and early at 9am. This time we headed to Brugge in Belgium. It took about three hours to get there and once we got there, believe me, my jaw dropped. It is gorgeous!!! We walked into the town square and it is breathtaking. The town was built in the 1600s and used to be the richest trade spot in Europe, but soon after the canal system was blocked off from the sea and the trade center moved to Antwerp. But all of the buildings are still there and beautiful. They are so ornate!!!

We walked around and then went to lunch. I had Belgium waffles and the two girls I was with had mussels. Both are the specialties here. One thing that is funny is that they have waffle stands in the street. After lunch we went to a few chocolate shops and ate some yummy, yummy Belgium chocolates. Then we went to an actual chocolate factory and bought more chocolate.

Brugge's Central Square; the entire town is breathtaking.

MONDAY-LUNCH IN CHINATOWN

Back in London, we ate lunch in China Town today. It was yummy. All of China Town was all decorated too because they had their New Year Celebration on Sunday. So that was way fun. Then at night I had a grip of fun...let me tell you. I went grocery shopping and did some homework...wow!!! Later, Devon came over and we chilled for awhile. By the way, Devon is this guy from Wyoming that lives by us. He's cool peoples. Well, that was my wild and crazy week.

God Save the Queen!!!
