Halloween Parties in L.A.
Los Angeles can be a frightening city. Certainly, the freeways have spooked many a traveler over time. So wait until you see it on Halloween. LA. is absolutely scary with the number of Halloween parties that take place in the city. There are two block parties, private events and, this year in Orange County, a big bash at the Fairgrounds. Amusement parks have haunted houses and don't overlook a mixer in a Hollywood cemetery.
And with Halloween being on a Saturday night in 2009, this year will be an absolute scream! • WEST HOLLYWOOD'S COSTUME CARNIVAL
The city's largest celebration – by far – takes place on Santa Monica Blvd., in West Hollywood. Approximately a half a million people turn out for this open street party. Want to see costumes? Display a costume? This is the place. In fact, with Hollywood costume designers part of the crowd, it's one of the best spots in the entire country to see and be seen. And that's just sooo L.A.
The event takes place between Doheny Dr. and La Cienega Blvd., from 6 p.m., until the midnight hour. Along the way are array of live music acts, contortionists, aerialists, stilt-walkers, DJs and illusionists will on stages scattered throughout the event. Most notably, Right Said Fred will bring "I’m Too Sexy" back and perform material from their new album. The event brings out gays, straights, couples and single people on the prowl. It's fun, friendly and a bit frightening (the costumes). • Links: For more on West Hollywood's annual Costume Carnival, Click here. • HALLOWEEN ON PINE, LONG BEACH
Another outdoor block party is taking place in downtown Long Beach. It's a party on Pine, thousands expected to attend the inaugural Halloween bash on Pine Avenue. Taking place between Broadway and 3rd Street, right in the heart of the city's downtown nightlife and entertainment area, DJ Groovy Lu and DJ Eromic will spin diabolical tunes and videos from the main stage while the crowd dances in the street. Pine Avenue will be flooded with fog, spooky lights and other decor. A costume contest with more than $1,000 in cash and prizes will feature the best dressed ghouls and goblins in five categories: Best Superhero, Best Villain, Best Female Overall, Best Male Overall and Most Outrageous. • Links: For a look at this area, see Long Beach Nightlife. • HALLOWEEN OC, ORANGE COUNTY
The huge OC Fair & Event Center is the site for this massive party. As many as 10,000 people could make their way here for it. There are five stages, and several different party areas, a haunted pumpkin patch, Go-Go dancers, a costume contest, giveaways and, because it's expected to last until 5 in the morning – yes, 5 a.m. in L.A. – an after-hours breakfast.
Cost is $34 GA, $75. The OC Fair & Event Center is located at 88 Fair Drive in Costa Mesa. For a prelude party, on Friday the 30th, there's the Halos n’ Horns Fest, also at the OC Fairgrounds, More than 100 bands are playing on 13 stages. A hundred bands – can that be correct? That's what they say! Tickets run from $25-$100. • Links: Friday night: Halosnhorns.com. Saturday night: HalloweenOC.com. Nearly all of Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo Beach singles go to this annual event at the reception hall by the Portofino Hotel in King Harbor, Redondo Beach. Except this year it's across the street at the Crown Plaza Holiday Inn (larger area, the orgainzers proudly boast).
The big room has a band, the somewhat smaller one a DJ that plays really fun dance/party music and there's a "chill" room for, well, chilling out. The scene here is for singles, though a few couples manage to make it through the door. And, with a location right by the King Harbor marina, it has a nice place to escape and get to know that nurse, cop or rock musician one just met inside. This year's event is on Friday, Rocktober 30. Admission is $40. This event always sells out in advance. • Links: The event's websiite is: Portofino Party.com. • HAUNTED HOUSES, THEME PARKS
