Barcycles Are Not Quite Rolling Bars
Gov. Jerry Brown has made those Barcycle so called “beer bike” bicycles legal on the streets in California,
So what does this mean for the business, the customers and beer lovers?
Well, maybe not a lot.
That’s because while the “bikes” are now permitted on the streets, drinking on them is up to individual cities. Brown took a ride through Sacramento and had a plastic cup in front of him but PubClub.com was not there so can’t say if beer was – or was not – in it.
He’s a pretty progressive dude, so it’s possible.
Several California cities have these “bikes,” which look like a rolling tiki bar of sorts, like something you might see at a Jimmy Buffett concert.
They hold around 10-15 people sitting on the outside of it, facing inward. People pedal and the device is steered by a (sober) person from the bike company who leads people – for a fee – to bars on a bar crawl.
There’s one in Venice Beach, in Santa Monica called the Barcycle along Main Street and another in San Diego. One was attempted in Hermosa Beach, a place where people ride their individual bikes to the bars on weekends anyway.
Still, it’s a fun way to get a group to do an afternoon bar-related activity.
But it would be more fun if you could drink on them, making the journey almost fun as the destinations. But that’s not necessarily the case.
So before booking, check with the operator.
