PubClub.com's Mid-August Newsletter:
Back
at the Beach

We would like to
think these people were there to greet us, but it was for Surf Festival.
It's been a summer on the
go for PubClub.com. In the past few months, we've been combing North
America to update cities, add new destinations and encounter new events.
Now, however, we are back home at our world headquarters
in Manhattan Beach, California. Just in time, too. Last week was one
the best parties of the year and this weekend the AVP is in town. As
always, look for our party patrol on the beach or on the site.
Where We've
Been

Not Bad Either:
Sunsets on English Bay in Vancouver were a pleasant surprise.
The Molson Indy. Or, should we say,
the Molson Indys. PubClub spent nearly the entire month of July in Canada.
The reason: The Molson Indy CART races in Toronto and Vancouver.
Now, those are two fine cities to be sure. But drop in
a few hundred thousand fans, pepper them with block parties, bar promotions,
Indy girls and bikini contests, and we're there! PubClub was at both
Driver VIP parties, was front row for two Miss Indy finals and in the
pits and paddock for the super-exciting race action.

While there, we updated our city guides to Toronto and
Vancouver. We found a place in the latter we never knew existed. It
exploded with spectacular sunsets and has a couple of great restaurant./bars
from which to enjoy them. We are, however, sad to report that one of
our favorite bars has burned down. On the bright side, the Roxy is still
gong strong!

In Toronto, we have greatly expanded our guide, dividing
our nightlife into two sections: Pubs and Clubs:

Manhattan Beach Surf Festival. Anyone from
the South Bay area knows about it. So do the country's best college
volleyball players and all the pros.
It's a drink-chilled, drunk-filled beach party, one that
features serious volleyball skills in a non-serious environment. Sponsored
teams attract top players from all over the States to dress up in silly
costumes, play 6-man beach volleyball and party with the crowd. Tents
line the beach and between games, players refresh themselves with beer,
cocktails and, Jell-O shots. A couple of thousand people well
lubricated in their own right come to cheer, cheers, laugh
and participate as cheerleaders, team bartenders or groupies.
Afterward, it's a race to the nearest bars to see who
will be King or Queen of the Beach.
The best part: We get to do it again this weekend with
the AVP's Manhattan Open (see below).

Where
We're Going

Carlos was our mult-fisted
guide to the Space Needle city.
Seattle. While in the Pacific
Northwest neighborhood visiting Vancouver, we decided to spend a little
time in Seattle. We found an official host to the city, and off we went.
The pubs, the clubs, the neighborhoods, the U-dub campus (University
of Washington), Pioneer Square, Pike Place Market, the parks, even the
new football stadium.
Our guide to Seattle will be published later this month.
AVP Manhattan Open. No, we're not referring
to the women's tennis tournament a few blocks away (and with no Anna
Kournikova what's the point?) but to the Association of Volleyball Professionals,
who are digging up the sand for the sport's top prize.
Beach volleyball started on this very beach and no player
is deemed worthy of the sport's accolades until he (or she) wins the
Manhattan Open. Sinjin Smith earned his "King of the Beach"
title here and last year's winner, Kevin Wong, calls it a career highlight.
We're making it a three-day tournament, starting with
courtside lunch on Friday. Saturday and Sunday, it's bouncing between
the beach and the bars, the shots and well, the shots.
Look for our Shot of the Day throughout the weekend, and
on Monday (after we clear our heads from the post-tournament player's
party), a complete report through pictures and prose.

Football
Season is Here (Close enough, anyway)
We don't know about you, but football is our favorite
sporting season. Why? Because of things like this: His team has only
played one exhibition game and already Steve Spurrier had alienated
the NFL. He threw a bomb on fourth-and-one (for a touchdown, no less)
in a lopsided preseason game. Welcome, not Spurrier to the NFL, but
the NFL to Spurrier.
We are particularly keen on college football. That's because
they really know how to party. Did your school make our preseason Top
10!?

He
Should Have Checked Out PubClub.com

There is no shortage
of the Aloha spirt on our site.
There was an interesting article recently in the Wall
Street Journal. A writer, back in his native Hawaii for a working vacation,
stopped into the bar at the W Hotel. He was horrified to find a pure
absence of local culture. The mostly 20s and 30s crowd was dressed in
chic black, just as in New York, Los Angeles or any other city. Where
were the Aloha shirts, he wondered.
Had he checked out PubClub's guide to Honolulu,
he would have known exactly where to find them and learned that Hawaii's
culture is alive and well in places like The Wave, the Red Lion, Duke's
and The Shorebird. Ahh, when will they ever learn?

Hot
Tip in L.A.
It's not on the site just yet, and
we've not checked it out to confirm, but the new hot spot in Los Angeles
appears to be the bar at The Standard hotel downtown. A sister
to the original on Sunset Strip, it is attracting the power business
crowd and scene-seekers who are always anxious to check out new territory.
Known for funky decor in a mostly white-colored environment, it is making
people actually want to spend time downtown.

Fun
Facts
No more free pizza delivery!? Say it ain't
so, but Pizza Hut, Papa John's and even Domino's which invented
free pizza delivery are now charging $1.50 to bring a pie to
your house in selected cities. Seems they are afraid of raising the
price of the actual pizza, so now they are sticking it to us with a
delivery charge. Let's see how long that policy lasts. We say revolt,
America, revolt!
On the Bright Side... The 99-Cent Store
is rolling out gourmet food and even wine at its nationwide stores across
the U.S. Take that, pizza men!
Cheers!
