PARTY
BUS!

Part of the PuClub
crew; they didn't see much of the race but had a blast.
It's billed as The World's Fastest Beach Party. And for good reason.
The annual Long Beach Grand Prix is right around the corner, and once
again PubClub.com has arranged for a PARTY BUS to take the South Bay
to and from the event. The date is Saturday, April 9. The bus will depart
from Sharkeez in Hermosa Beach at 10 a.m., and return at 8:30 p.m. The
Party Bus will be featured in the Long Beach Press-Telegram!

THE GRAND PARTY @ THE GRAND PRIX
For those who make this an annual journey, we look forward to seeing
you again. For newbies, this is an incredible all-day party. There are
people everywhere out for a good time and your ticket allows you to
walk around and soak up the sights. To soak up the suds, there are many
bars in the area. The most popular is the Yard House on the water in
Shoreline Village and there are weekend specials at a new place called
Casa Vino, which is on the backstraight.
The bus arrives in time to see the Pro/Celebrity race (starts at noon)
which is always a blast. This year's race has Karl Malone, Patrick Dempey
and Meatloaf. The new "rollercoaster" bridge is a great viewing area.
The Grand Prix is all about going around the grounds to "see and be
seen," then bar-hopping. It's one of Southern California's top social
party scenes!
There's
also an Expo with BMX biking demonstrations and you can pay a small
fee and actually race a go-kart on top of the parking garage next to
where the celebrity cars are parked. For racin' fans, the "big
boys" qualify to set the grid for Sunday's race, at 2 p.m. At 3,
a facinating type of racing called Drifting slides around the track.
Be near a tight corner and watch for tons of tire smoke and squealing.
At 5 p.m., there is a concert by Hermosa's own Pennywise! This is
at the main entrance, which is the bus dropoff location. Afterward is
the Miss Grand Prix pageant. Don't make those faces, girls. This is
a choreographed, classy show set to cool music. Grand Prix photos, a
complete information guide and a link to a map can be found by clicking
the Long Beach Grand Prix Party Bus link under the Shot of the
Day on the home page.
It is strongly suggested to have breakfast at Sharkeez (which includes
free mimosas, plus there's a bloody mary bar). See the PubClubettes
to check in and get a wristband. The ride will take approximately 45
minutes; drinking is allowed on the bus but don't take coolers, as they
won't let them in the track. To-go cups work best.
That evening, the bus will depart from the corner of Pine Ave., and
Ocean; the bar on the corner is the Rock Bottom (and there are several
bars on Pine Ave.). You'll be back in Hermosa shortly after 9.

The Miss Grand Prix pageant, a hit in '04, returns in '05 after Pennywise.
Cost is $50, which includes a ticket into the event, the Pennywise
concert, R/T bus trip and Grand Prix Fan Guide. We'l probably also have
a few more goodies. You must sign up in advance. This will sell out
so be prompt!

NIGHTCLUB
AND BAR TRADE SHOW COVERAGE

Sammy Hagar's 2-hour concert was a highlight of this year's show.
We suppose we are supposed to use this space to tell you what the new
trends in bars and cocktails are for the coming year, since we recently
attended the annual Nightclub and Bar Trade Show in Las Vegas.
Instead, we would prefer to show you how great a show this is each
and every year. Samples of drinks, beer and endless varieties of shots
on the showfloor are only part of the story. There are mixers and huge
parties each evening. This year, we were able to get to the rock concert
featuring Sammy Hagar. See and read for yourself!
And we did our reporting job by searching out some of those new trends.

TRUE
MARCH MADNESS
Words
of Non-Wisdom From The Bartender
I was reading a pre-NCAA Tournament article in the Los Angeles Times
last week that talked about how many people have office (and other)
pools, and about how interest tails off like an off-mark three-pointer
once the second weekend arrives because so many people are eliminated.
At the time, I had my bracket information scattered about the floor,
pen in hand, all ready to roll with winning picks. After a disappointing
result last year, I was really ready to make a deep run in 2005.
Alas, before noon (Pacific time) on the first day, I was out.
The big blow was my alma-mater, Alabama, going down in the first round.
More than the pool, I was looking for the Tide to make a big splash
this year, perhaps even exceeding last season's Elite Eight performance.
Alas, the team had a bad match-up and got up against a team unconscious
shooting the 3s. Had 'em going to the Final Four (don't laugh too hard;
the Tide matches up really well against Illinois).
When Pittsburgh went down moments later, I was all but finished. Some
start to St. Patrick's Day! After a slight rally on Saturday, things
south again when LSU clanged its way back to Baton Rouge Florida bit
the dust. Too much faith in the SEC? Let's just say the Gators have
let me down twice in a row and that won't happen again.
Even with this personal futility, it was fun. March Madness can bring
friends and strangers together to root for a particular result on a
game that otherwise would be meaningless. You high-five or scream "arrg!"
with people you may never encounter ever again. The bar scene among
the best of the year and the fact that the first weekend falls on St.
Patrick's Day only adds to the revelry.
The Sweet 16 is this weekend and while ''ve folded like a poker player
with a bad hand, I'll still be watching. If a former sportswriter who
should be in the know about such things can kiss the tournament goodbye
before he even has a beer on St. Paddy's Day, then don't get too bummed
about your own bracket.
March Madness, indeed!
