May –The Month of Party Events

Maybe it's the start of Spring and the shedding of winter coats (at least in half the world). Or maybe it's some type of innate (party) animal instinct that brings out humans to large events. Or maybe, May is simply a traditional time for huge party events and let's just leave it at that without the analysis.

In fact, there's two this weekend:

• The Kentucky Derby. This is the 130th Run for the Mint Juleps (why run for roses when there are mint juleps to be had)? And the place to party is the infield. What's it like? We can tell you and show you. (Here's an excerpt: "Absolute chaos is the way some would describe it. I have to call it the biggest drunken orgy I've ever been to in my life.") Use it if you are going, or think about it when you are watching with a group of friends and a bar or house party and ask yourself: "Why the heck aren't we THERE?"

The infield is where it's at for Derby Day.

For more on the drink of the day, check out this story we found in the Cincinnati Enquirer about the Myth of the Mint Julep.

• JazzFest New Orleans.Harry Connick, Jr., Santana, Smokey Robinson, the Neville Brothers and Pete Fountain play this second of two weekends. But there's so much more to be enjoyed. This huge outdoor music, food and beer festival is a party from noon until dark. At which time, things move over to Bourbon Street because, well, it's in New Orleans! Sleep is secondary, naturally.

Now, with these two events backed up against one another in a relatively small geographic area, what would you think the Ultimate Double-Party Weekend would entail... And then there's this on the horizon:

• Cinco de Mayo. To celebrate the Mexican Revolution, states bordering Mexico hold fiestas in cantinas. Mainly, it's an excuse for Gringos to party on a day they would otherwise be doing nothing (the Mexicans barely recognize it in their home country). And who doesn't enjoy blowing out of work early to join a bunch of strangers out for multiple margaritas? Salud!
•  Bay to Breakers. This 7-mile run/walk/cocktail-toting extravaganza – give or take a stumble or two – makes its annual appearance on Sunday, May 16. Unless you're hot, we suggest leaving the nude running to others. This starts the summer of events in San Francisco where there's some type of cool street festival every other weekend.

• Memorial Day. Everyone has their favorite group gathering place, and it usually involves being around water. And Lake Travis outside of hot Austin, Texas, is so great we have devoted not one, but TWO pages to the party. And it could be 3 after this year:

Looking Back to April

The party bus crew arrives after bloody marys and mimosas at the GP.

• Long Beach Grand Prix and Party Bus. This annual event once again proved to be an awesome PubClub trip. We started with bloody marys and mimosas on Saturday morning, April 17, at Harry O's, then we took a bus trip to the Grand Prix. Few people managed to enjoy the Celebrity Race (won by Italian Stallion driver Max Papis with Lil' Kim bringing up the rear) because they preferred to go straight to the bars. "It seems to me," one rookie commented, "that it was a $50 entry fee into a pub crawl. I didn't see any race cars but I sure had a great time. Save me a place for next year!" Many did make it out to the free concert by Everclear and the Miss Grand Prix pageant, of which PubClub has spectacular photos.

Looking Ahead to June

• World Music Festival, Denver (June 11-12) A celebration of music from all over the world: Latin jazz, Asian fusion, Afro-Cuban, Celtic, global electronica Caribbean reggae and more. Tickets $20 in advance, $25 at door.

• Estero Beach & PARTY BUS!!! (June 25-27). A regional event that's a staple of the Southern California volleyball and party community. Really, who wants to sweat on the beach all day chasing down a little white ball when $2 cervezas, a poolside bar and Jacuzzi are available? Well, about a thousand people, that's who, but a couple more thousand just go for the latter. And this year, PubClub has teamed up with the Marissa & Chris Club for a PARTY BUS to Estero! $120 includes the bus (Friday-Sunday), booze for the weekend and transportation to/from an Ensenada hotel (rooms extra but can be reserved in the block). For info, click on the link below. And check out PubClub's Party Guide to Estero.

By the bar or on the beach, Estero is one big party.

Backpacking Through Europe

• Our college student, Amy, has completed her winter courses in London and is now backpacking her way through Europe. She just left Munich for Prague and next has Austria in her sights. After that it's the Greek Islands (including Corfu and the legendary Pink Palace; does she know what she's getting into??), and Athens, where she fact-checking our ancient city guide and getting the latest scoop on the party places and more for the 2004 Summer Games. Follow her personal journals, and also look for new content party guides to these and other European destinations.

Party News

Interesting items from the world of partying:

• Friday Nights at Harry O's. This legendary Manhattan Beach (CA) party spot has started Skyy Fridays. The traditional live bands have been replaced by a DJ who actually plays good music. It's a combination of dance, fun tunes and occasional rock 'n roll. In conduction with Skyy Vodka, it features NO COVER for girls, $5 guys. And anyone who knows Harry O's knows the place makes killer cocktails, so it's always a good time. The bands are still there on Saturdays, by the way. Harry O's is at 3600 Highland Ave. (310) 545-4444.

• Hot Hotel Deals in South Beach. Here are three hip hotels to check out.

• Miss USA &Tom Cruise. PubClub was invited to attend the Miss USA Pageant recently at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. Check out the photos on the Shot of the Day page. Oh, and for the girls, we saw (and snapped) Tom Cruise at the Long Beach GP.

•  University of Wisconsin Tries to Eliminate Happy Hours. Our #8 Top Party School  so honored because of the students and alumni, not the administration – has somehow persuaded 20 Madison bars to eliminate Happy Hour. Okay, they are college bars in Wisconsin, so drinks are cheap anyway but no more boots full of beer for $2 and the like? We think this is unfair " badgering" of the Badger students.

• Here's Something We Can Drink To. US beer interests are lobbying for a rollback of the federal excise tax imposed on their products. According to Congress Daily, beer wholesalers are preparing for a massive lobbying push later this month on Capitol Hill for their policy agenda. The group is also said to be joining the Beer Institute, which represents brewing interests, in funding up to $30,000 in radio and print advertising to promote the industry's agenda. Cheers to that, we say!

We appreciate your time and hope to see you out on the town!
