Vancouver Sightseeing and Activities
Stanley Park is
an awesome spot to run, walk or just admire the view.
With a harbor at its side, a sensational
park hugging the water, a popular mountain within viewing distance of
downtown and one of North America's best ski resorts an hour away, Vancouver
has plenty of Post Party activities to keep visitors active and happy
when they are not enjoying a pub or club.
If outdoor activities are your thing, Vancouver has an abundance of
options. One of the best is Stanley Park. The highlight is the
8-km. shoreline path. It's a spectacular running, bicycling, rollerbading
and walking spot. The point at the lighthouse seems to reach right out
into the sea.The park also includes the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science
Center, a rose garden and plenty of green areas to relax, read a book
or plop down for a picnic.
Being basically an environmentally-friendly city, Vancouver is full
of parks. Vanier Park in Kitsilano is a 30-acre park with an
observatory, maritime museum and space center.
A great way to see Vancouver is not from land but from the water. Kayaking
down False Creek is a relaxing experience that flows past downtown,
BC Place and the Science World/Omnimax (an attraction all to
itself); rentals are on Granville Island.
More adventurous souls can handglide off nearby
Grouse Mountain, getting a full view of downtown
Vancouver in the process. The Capilano Suspension
Bridge invites people to cross its swinging structure 137
meters above the Capilano River. Both of these activities are a short
car ride from downtown.
The main attraction at the Vancouver Aquarium (adjacent to Stanley
Park; 604-659-3474) is the outdoor exhibit of large beluga whales.
If it's raining, Canada Place has an OmniMax theater
and the Science Center is interesting, although be aware of the large
numbers of children and familieswhich can test the patience of those
fighting a hangover.
Vancouver also gets big-name rock concerts that play at various venues
and also has theaters and playhouses. Art galleries dot the city and
a couple of museums highlight the city's history (Vancouver Museum,
1100 Chestnut Street, 604-736-4431) and it's harbor history (the Vancouver
Maritime Museum, Ogden at Cypress, 604-237-8300).
For those who like to watch sports, Vancouver has a professional
hockey team, the Canucks (604-290-4400) which play in GM Place.
The Canadian Football League's BC Lions also play in GM Place
and in September, the city roars to life with the Molson
Indy Vancouver, a huge street party/CART car race. Plus,
it's sponsored by a beer company. Vancouver recently had an NBA team,
the Grizzleys, but they are moving to Memphis. Memphis!? Okay, whatever.
A good journey is Vancouver Island. Victoia is a beautiful
garden-filled city fairly near Vancouver. Just jump on a ferry for a
plesant two-hour ride. Seplanes and helicopters cut the travel time
to about a half-hour. Information is available next to Canada Place.

The Molson Indy
in July brings in the Miss Indy contestants.
