Cutting Loose in Cabo
Memorial Day weekend was a wet and wild 4-day vacation

The moment was finally here, the moment
the group of 40+ had waited for since November.
It was May 24th, and we were leaving for Cabo San Lucas, Mexico! Being
my first time there, I was especially excited. Several in our group
had gone last year so they already had the bars scoped and pretty much
had an itinerary in their heads.
We arrived in Cabo around 6 p.m., and boarded the bus from the airport
to the hotel. Being that it was illegal to bring your own booze and
drink on the plane a rule which some conveniently forgot we
stopped at a liquor store along the way to buy beer and booze. The 4-day
binge was on.
Along the way we were reminded of this weekend's motto: "What happens
in Mexico, stays in Mexico!" Even if that did not turn out to be the
case as memories have been rehashed on a daily basis, we constantly
uttered those words anyway.
Our
first stop was our gorgeous hotel, the Melia San Lucas. I was on the
top floor with an incredible view of the pool below and the ocean, Lover's
Cove, etc. The view absolutely took my breath away!
We barely had time to change before we hit the first spot of the night,
and for that matter almost every night, The Gigglin' Marlin. This was
a place to do upside-down shots and watch the little dance "productions"
they put on every night. It's not a place to spend the entire night,
but it is good for starting off the evening.
The infamous Squid Roe was our next stop. If you get there between
12:00-1:00, you are getting there at Prime Time! Several nights were
spent dancing and drinking until the wee hours. After that, we had to
get some food, usually a shack that served tacos(what a surprise?) By
the time we stumbled home, it was 4:00 AM and my head was spinning.
I figured I should get some sleep, the weekend was just beginning!
I managed to wake up by 10:30 the next morning with little effects
of a hangover. The only downside of the Melia is that it doesn't have
a gym. However, that was easily remedied by walking to the hotel next
door and using its facilities. I walked in like I owned the place and
got in with no problem. Starting off the day with a good 30-40 min sweat
on the bike or treadmill is definitely the way to start off a long day
of drinking!
Our
next stop was a bar called The Office. If my "office" was
like this, I would never complain about going to work! It's right on
the beach and we had several tables set up both in the shade and the
sun and sampled their food as the local vendors inundated us with jewelry,
henna tatoos, lamps, whistles, wooden fish, and most anything they could
think to sell.
This visit to the Office was a quick one because back at the Melia,
Happy Hour was from 1-2 at the swim-up bar. What a way to spend the
afternoon, 2 for 1 margaritas and pina colatas you can't beat
that!
We managed to collect ourselves later that evening (no power nap for
the die-hards) and hit the Gigglin' Marlin. Being with my friend "Mayor
Munoz," we of course ran into some girls we had met last year.
We traded shots and headed over to Squid Roe to dance our asses off.
It was, in short, another late night, another bout with a spinning
room.
The next day was our infamous Booze Cruise. A boat takes you out around
the bay where everyone commences to get hammered and do body shots.
Now I am not one for tequila, but these opportunities couldn't be missed!
Later that night, we had a nice dinner on the beach in front of our
hotel. The service was slow, but the company was good. Afterward, we
headed to Cabo Wabo. This was a fun time because it was crowded, but
not so crowded you couldn't move like Squid Roe. Plus it had a live
band. So, it was a nice twist.
Sooner or later, everyone ends up at Squid Roe. After hooking up with
some lovely ladies, some in our group were content to leave around 2
and not close down the place. I was one of them!
It
was now Sunday morning and I was starting to feel the effects of constantly
drinking since Thursday night. As a way to ease into the day, I hit
the gym for some quick cardio and then went on my first scuba dive.
No, I am not certified, but you don't have to be, either. Just shell
out the $$$, sign a waiver, and you're in! I managed to go 40 ft down
and see all sorts of fish, jellyfish, eels, and even an octopus.
After getting back to the shore, we went to the Mango bar, next door
to The Office, to take in the Lakers NBA playoff game. Being from San
Antonio, I was hoping my team would show up and at least win 1 game.
I was sadly mistaken! While I was lamenting, everyone proceeded to get
up and dance on the tables and the bar. As the hours went on, the sun
finally went down. Our last night in Cabo was upon us.
We started off at Cabo Wabo again but we found it increasingly>harder
to catch a buzz. After a few shots, we suddenly found it very easy!
We danced and drank even more until we finally declared that we were
done. I went home with my "friend" and had a nice nightcap.
"Mayor Munoz"
(right) partying Cabo-style on the bar.
The next morning, I was both sad and relieved sad that
I hadn't got to do some of the things I wanted to do, relieved that
I could go home and get back to a "normal" life. We checked out at noon
and sat around The Office until our van came to take us to the airport.
I slept the entire flight back, waking just long enough to eat the
airplane meal. We got back and the sun came with us! From what I heard,
it was foggy and overcast at home the entire weekend.
Speaking of foggy, my recollection of Memorial Day Weekend in Cabo
surely left things out, but from what I remember, it was a blast! I
would call the weekend a rousing success and highly recommend it to
anybody. But then again, every weekend where I live in the
South Bay is a vacation. Cheers!
