The Kentucky Derby
The Infield is 'Absolute Chaos'

The infield party scene makes Derby Day one of America's great events.

2009 Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is America's Great Party.

It's the wild and wonderful infield scene that makes it this way. The actual event is an afterthought, simply the excuse, similar to Jimmy Buffett concerts or the Long Beach Grand Prix.

The craziness happens all over the infield but the primary partying action is the Third Turn Party. Elsewhere, people stake out spots for personal partying, wearing those big Kentucky Derby hats and having plenty of mint juleps by their side.

For many, the real horseplay is not on the track, but the infield.

The Derby, though, it more than a one-afternoon affair. Leading up the first Saturday of May – 2009 is the 135th Run for the Roses –are two days of pre-party events called the Crown Royal Festival in the Field. This year, this perfect warmup to Derby Day featured country music artists TelluRide and DJ Vice as the headliners.

Entry to the infield concert , which takes place on the Infield Club, is $15 and includes admission to the track. Music starts at 11 a.m.

On Friday, May 1, there is even entertainment surrounding the Kentucky Oaks. Gates open at 8 a.m., with bands taking the stage at 11 (tickets for this day are $25).

Drinking all day is not a problem for these Infield folks.

The bands play in the infield as part of a regular concert held since 1997. In addition to name acts, local bands play throughout the day and night.

Post time for the Derby on Saturday is 6:04 p.m. GA tickets for the Derby are $40.

THURSDAY – The real partying in Louisville doesn't begin until Friday. On Thursday, the scene is in Lexington, where all the horse farms are located. On Friday, everyone makes the short drive to Louisville and, well, let the partying begin!

FRIDAY – The Pegasus paraide kicks off the weekend festivities. Today it's the action at the Oaks race. The Brownsdale gala is the grandaddy of them all on this night; Louisville looks looks like Hollyood as celebrities and sports icons like Tom Brady and Randy Moss, reality stars Heidi Mongag and Spencer Pratt walk the red carpet. Louisville's 4th Street scene is the place to be seen; for many, though, the long day at the Kentucky Oaks takes its toll and they start to roll back to their rooms by 11 p.m.

The scene at 4th Street Live.

DELICIOUS DEE, THE VIP – It was the 2008 Derby and Delicious Dee made her way to the front of a huge line to inquire about the VIP entrance, where a very nice gentleman named Jake, a multiple club owner from Ottawa, Canada, asked if we would like to be escorted to the entrance.  Delicious Dee took the Southern route and delightfully said "please" and "thank you."

Greeted by Alli (Alexandria the PR rep in charge of the party), the sponsored event by In Touch Weekly, Budweiser Select, Pama Pomogranate, and Proflowers was just about to get started.  With ice sculptures, an open bar (for select people) and non other than DJ AM spinning from midnight to 3 am, you knew this was the place you wanted to be tonite.

Despite the rain pouring down for most of the evening, it wasn't enough to keep the celebrities away from the party. Coming in slowly, as the many Galas around town were ending, were Bob Guinney from the Bachelor and his wife from All My Children, Heros Star Greg Grunberg, Michael Strahan of the Super Bowl champion New York Giants and Larry Birkhead, just to name a few. And many, many more continued to walk through the door.

The In Touch after-hours party continued on into the wee hours of the morning and DJ AM had everyone moving and shaking.  I had a wonderful time meeting and greeting and realized it was Hollywood only with Kentucky accents...it obvious though that these Kentuckians know how to party! As the night moved onto morning, Delicious Dee realized she had better move on, as another big day was ahead of her – covering the party of "fastest two minutes in sports" for PubClub.com.

– SATURDAY: KENTUCKY DERBY DAY –

Today is the big day...mint julep anyone??? I The twin spires provide the backdrop to the infield and even at 11 a.m., it's evident the party has already started. And the drinks are also flowing on the other side of the track in the reserved seats and boxes.

Most people here party in the paddock until it's time to make bets, then go to their seats.

INFIELD REPORT – A mud-wrestling contest broke out – this could be written any year – only to be broken up by the Louisville police. This prompted people to start throwing mud around as if it were frisbees. Ahh, the Kentucky Derby infield.

MORE FROM DELICOUS DEE – So the 10th race (the actual Derby) runs at 6 and last call is 5:15 What's a girl to do!? Oh, I know – make it a double!

POST-RACE POST – The Fastest 2 minutes are just that fast! Then it's a few more sips of our bourbon while singing of "My Old Kentucky Home."

Upon exiting Churchill Downs, be prepared for a long taxi wait. Maybe two, perhaps 2 1/2 hours.

Needless to say this ain't New York or LA folks, and taxis don't run smoothly. Lesson of the day?  Hire a limo or car for the weekend and save your self a headache better yet if you need transportation in Louisville go for EBC Transport Service and ask for Melvin...he will take care you...Melvin...thanks for all your help, it's more than appreciated!!

PubClub Correspondent Delicious Dee is providing PubClub with text updates from her cellphone all weekend. If she doesn't have tooo many mint juleps, then she will be posting photos, as wel

The Kentucky Derby Infield Party Scene
– Correspondent: Peter Bales –

NATIONALITY:
American (Dayton, Ohio)
DRINKS: Mint juleps on Derby weekend, of course.
FAVORITE DERBY CUSTOM: The flamboyant hats.

The Kentucky Derby brings out the stars from all over the world. "Millionaires Row" in the magnificent grandstands at Churchill Downs is a "Who's Who" in the world of movies, sports and politics.

Our correspondent Pete found plenty to smile about on Derby Day.

Sure, there are some great, classy parties that happen around the stables and in the grandstands. But the real party is in the infield.

Seventy five to 100,000 thirty-somethings pack the middle of the track for a the first Saturday in May. It's a day not to be forgotten any time soon.

'Absolute chaos' is the way some would describe it. I have to call it the biggest drunken orgy I've ever been to in my life. Bar none, it's the best party I've ever attended. Almost anything goes.

If you are not hurting yourself or anyone else, you will not be bothered by the authorities. You are not allowed to bring alcohol in to the infield but nearly everyone finds a way to smuggle in their favorite beverage. If not, beer can be purchased for $6 a glass. The $40 admission price is worth every penny. The scenery is breathtaking. People bare it all.

The horse race? Oh yeah. The biggest horse race in the world happens right before your eyes. Watching the race from the infield is no easy task. There are big screen TV's located at each turn but it is not the easiest thing to see after 4 to 8 hours of drinking.

None the less, I will never miss a day at the Derby. Enjoy the pictures I have provided.

The Mint Julep Recipe ($8 at the Derby)

Naturally, bourbon is King in Kentucky. And only Kentucky bourbon can be used in an authentic mint julep served at the Kentucky Derby. Here is the recipe:
• 2 cups sugar
•  2 cups water
•  Sprigs of fresh mint
•  Crushed ice
•  Kentucky Whisky

Cheers!
