Article on a hotel in the heart of Old San Juan by the cruise ship terminal.

Welcome to the Shearton Old San Juan!

The modern Sheraton stands out in hstoric Old Town San Juan.

Like the staff who is there with a friendly greeting and helpful hand, let us open the door for you to the Sheraton in Old Town, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Notice the nice lobby and the friendly check-in staff, ready to send you to a perfectly-appointed room. Peer over the shoulder to the casino, as you are sure to be there later.

And take note there is a nice restaurant featuring breakfast and lunch buffets – as well as a Sunday brunch – and a good 'ol fashioned burger joint with a huge variety of enticing toppings.

The Sheraton's well-appointed rooms have modern conveniences in Old Town.

There's also a workout room and it's next to a top-floor pool and patio that looks over the bay. The rooms are large enough so that in the doubles, the roommates are not bumping into each other or the wall, and they have a coffee maker, an Internet connection and thick and thirsty towels.

Yet the best thing about the Sheraton Old Town becomes apparent when guests are not even in the hotel. It's the location, right across from the new anchor-style Carnival cruise terminal, the ferry that takes visitors to the Bacardi Rum factory and the restaurants, attractions, shopping and nightlife of historic Old Town. The del Morrow fort on the far side of Old Town is but a 20-minute walk away. Or a leisurely 10-minute ride on the free trolley.

There's a relaxing pool (top) and attractive outdoor seating at Chicago Burger.

And it is in Old Town where one will discover another fascinating aspect of the Sheraton. It's a modern facility in historic surroundings.

"It's a good mix of the old and new," said Carolyn Quintana, revenue manager of the Old Town Sheraton. "People can stay in a modern place within an old city."

Among those modern amenities at the Sheraton are:
• Two restaurants
• Concierge Service
•  Business Center/Services
•  Laundry/Valet Service
•  Wireless High Speed Internet Access in rooms and public areas (charge)
•  Valet Service and Pay/Self Parking
•  24-Hour Room Service

Dogs to 20 pounds are allowed.

Rates in the high season, which is December-April, start at $295 per night.
