San Francisco Bar Guide

Zany and crazy as ever, San Francisco's annual Bay to Breakers took to the streets the third Sunday in May and made it another successful event.

Kegs and cocktails cruised the course. The most ambitious float had to be the wooden Trojan Horse – yes, a Trojan Horse. Pirate ships were the most common theme, ranging from a large vessel with a platform and sword-wielding wenches to cardboard simply wrapped around a shopping cart.

This an annual festival of 75,000 of the City's finest – and not so finest – find a way to celebrate life, make harmless political statements (more than a couple of swipes were taken at F.E.M.A.) and roll with the punches of the weather. In 2006, the skies were mostly cloudy, a contrast to this time of the year which is usually the best weather all year in San Francisco.

New in '06 from an organizational standpoint was forcing people to not actually go to the breakers, but break off either to the post-event Footstock festival or to the right out out of Golden Gate Park (not surprisingly, most choose the latter).

There was, to many people's amazement if not amusement, an "alcohol checkpoint." Officials needed not to worry; there was plenty for all. If nothing else, the signs saying "Alcohol Checkpoint Ahead" made for many photo opportunities among the participants.

In addition to the floats, there was dancing in the streets.

So much for trying to take a photo when someone goes off to visit the bushes.
