Soaked in the City
Bay to Breakers 2002

Bay to Breakers was like one giant moving shower party

• PubClub's Guide to San Francisco

I survived.

That's what the t-shirts said and never was it more true than in 2002.

The weather gods played a cruel joke on the 91st Bay to Breakers "race." They soaked the City with sunshine for more than a week and on Sunday morning just flat out soaked the place. A steady and sometimes even heavy rain drenched participants over the length of the event. For many that was more than four hours.

In an odd way – San Francisco-style – the wet weather actually added a bit to the frenzy. People adopted healthy a "screw it" attitude and went nuts. You've never seen 75,000 people so miserable and happy at the same time. So while it was wet, it was also wild. Very wild.

There were street parties, a couch on wheels, people dressed up and performing as The Village People, "gentlemen" rolling kegs offering "beer for breasts" and, of course, the Tiki Bar. Ahh, the Tiki Bar. The blender was active, the beer was flowing and the music cranking.

It was the first Bay to Breakers for "Team Canada," a trio of Canucks who flew in from Toronto to join PubClub.com's Bartender at the event. They tore through the City in four days and nights of partying and spent $150 on beer just for the race. Canadians do love their beer. Despite the rain, they all vowed to come back next year.

So, too, no doubt, will all the others.

The house and street parties carried on as if it were sunny.

The Canadian PubClubbers spent $150 on beer at the Marina Safeway.

All dry and wearing his "I Survived" t-shirt, The Bartender relaxes after the race.
