Jazz Fest Tips, Bands, Party Guide

JazzFest 2007 Party and Music Scene

• The crowds are back. After a slower season in '06, the first day had what appeared to be record attendance. And it only went up from there. The crowds on Bourbon Street afterward are back to pre-Katrina levels, too.

• Beers are $4 and $5; slushy drinks are $5.

• Tickets are $45 – up considerably from previous years. Transportation options are a bus ($16 R/T, catch it from the Sheraton on Canal Street), taxis ($10, plus $2 for each additonal person) or the street car ($1.50).

• The food is as good as ever.

• Check out the Fais Do Do stage. It features local Cajun bands and provides a true feel of the music of New Orleans. Fais Do Do means to dance, by the way.

• The cool fans and tents with misting water are popular resting spots.

• The acoustics in the Blues tent are pretty poor on the side when the tent is full.

• After the JazzFest is over, don't go home! Two bars continue the partying, one right outside the main gate by the taxi stand (the Seahorse Saloon) and an even bigger one that turns into a multi-block street party at Ponce de Leon and N. Lopez (Liuzza's).

Jazz Fest is back. Two years after Hurricane Katrina put it – and the city on the edge – this national music festival is playing to near-record crowds.

Held at the New Orleans Fair Grounds about 15 minutes from the French Quarter, the 2007 version features Rod Stewart, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrision, ZZ Top, Harry Connick, Jr., and local musicians ranging from Cowboy Mouth to the famed Louisiana Hayride in six days over two weekends (end of April, first of May).

For these party girls, JazzFest '07 is just a walk in the park.

Enough already! A typical scene at JazzFest.

Sunset at the fairgrounds. But more parties await just outside the gates.
