San Diego's Street Scene Party
Photos!

Costumes and craziness
once again stood out at Street Scene in 2002.
Maybe it's the costumes.
Could be the bands.
Or maybe it's the fact you can openly drink in what is normally city
streets.
Whatever
the reason, Street Scene in San Diego held annually the second
weekend of September brings out tens of thousands of music fans,
unique revelers, party-goers and others. They mix, they mingle, they
drink, they dance, they cheer and they party.
In 2002 the spirits were flowing and the sprit was high. A huge lineup
that included the Stone Temple Pilots, Common Sense, James Brown, Melissa
Ethridge and the Violent Femms, plus a wild and wildly popular electronic
tent, kept the downtown Gaslamp area jumping.
A mix of street vendors and bars provide margaritas, rum drinks and
plenty of beer. There was even a furniture gallery serving martinis.
PubClub.com used Tivoli, a dive bar with good beer around the corner
from the Ford Stage as our unofficial home party base.
"Forty-five dollars is a lot to pay to get in but I didn't blink
an eye," said a happy reveler from San Diego. "I like the
party, the bands and the bars after the bands."
Someone else was more to the point: We just came for the bars,' she
said.
Others felt a distinctive San Diego flavor when she remarked: "What
other town would someone show up to a massive street party full of bands
with a skateboard attached to his back?"

The Electronica
tent went wild (top); Tivoli provided super service (bottom)

Street Scene is
a perfectly popular place for bachlorette parties on the prowl.

Just like the camera
lens, thePubClub crew got a bit smeared at Tivoli.

Three Down and Looking Forward to a Fourth
By Special Events
Correspondent
Joe del Real
Street Scene in San Diego continues to be one of the most happening
and crowded outdoor party events in Southern California. This was
my third year in a row (2002) and I foresee a fourth next year.
There¹s something about being able to legally walk around the streets
of San Diego with a drink in your hand among tens of thousands of other
people doing the same thing. .
Music is one of the main attractions at the Street Scene.
With a beer in hand, us PubClubbers started out by heading to the Ford
Stage to see the end of Blues Traveler, which was the first of four
acts at this large, main stage area. I was surprised at how crowded
the stage area was that early on, but then again, Blues Traveler was
a good draw.
Next we headed to Tivoli, a small bar within Street Scene with a good
street patio which allowed us to see and talk to the many people walking
by. Tivoli also has very good-looking female beer servers along the
female customers.
After a while I left my PubClub friends at the bar and went wandering
the streets on my own. I ended up at the blackjack tables to make some
new friends and play for a chance to win prizes I really didn¹t want.
By this time, I had switched to drinking margaritas from one of the
outdoor booths. While they didn¹t taste very strong, they did pack a
good punch.
With the help of cell phones, I rejoined my PubClub friends for a little
socializing on the streets. We found ourselves at the extremely loud
electronica tent, then at Dick's Last Resort.
I don't know if it's me or just Street Scene, but I kept my tradition
of losing eveyone, including people I just met.
So, I went back to the streets for more socializing on my own. By this
time it was getting to be the last hour of Street Scene (it closes down
at midnight but the surrounding bars stay open till 2:00 am). I headed
back to the Ford Stage to see the Melissa Etheridge. The audience was
filled with women with ³alternative lifestyles², but who am I to judgeŠor
complain.
I ended up meeting a new friend there (one with a more conventional
lifestyle). We stayed to the end and then headed out together to hit
the bars which stayed open a while longer. While we were drinking and
dancing together late night at Hennessey¹s San Diego, guess who happens
to walk inŠmy PubClub friends.
At Street Scene, we all seem to come together in the end.
