Team Sharkeez
Rocks the Super Bowl 10K
Team Sharkeez celebrates
at the Sharkeez HB post-race victory party.
Wearing grass skirts, leis and party
buckets on their heads and sporting a fun-first, finish-second attitude,
Team Sharkeez ruled the Silver Anniversary running of the Redondo Beach
Super Bowl 10K, held on Super Bowl Sunday, 2003.
For the third consecutive year,
Sharkeez and PubClub.com combined to participate in the second-largest
10K on the West Coast. Nearly 10,000 runners, walkers and rollerbladers
many of whom came attired in outlandish costumes covered
the 6.2-mile, oceanside course on a beautiful but hot winter morning
in Redondo Beach, CA.

The
Bartender, our party columnist, just before his mid-race
beer break.
Nobody was more outlandish than Team Sharkeez. This was evident at
the post-race beer garden, where cameras constantly clicked and other
teams joined in for photo ops. Photographers from all the area's media
outlets swarmed around Team Sharkeez, which had almost as many photos
taken of them that day as Jon Gruden.
Each member used his/her own creativity to customize their party buckets
sharks, the large straws, drink glasses, etc. The Team Sharkeez
buckets were decorated at a special pre-party the previous Friday at
Sharkeez in Manhattan Beach. All that was missing were drinks along
the way.

Team Sharkeez attacted
plenty of partiers in the ever-popular beer garden.
But wait, there WERE drinks along the way. The weather was so hot that
passing up the pub at the 3-mile mark was unthinkable. So they peeled
off the race course and enjoyed a totally refreshing pint while others
had to settle for the tiny aqua cups at the water stations.
And then there's the beer garden, where Team 80s, the guys in 70s disco
afros and Ozzie Osborne all wanted to hang with Team Sharkeez. Among
the other costumes were Tampa Bay Bucs cheerleaders and Team Beer, which
ran inside an inflatable swimming pool.Wisely, the nearly-naked male
runner in the G-string elected not to go to the beer garden.
Ahh, yes, the beer garden. It's the reason most of the people race
to party together afterward! Kind of a drag this year was the
fact that the beer garden actually ran out of beer. This was hard to
believe, especially considering the event is sponsored by a beer company.
Hopefully, this was a one-year hiccup.
After the beer garden, Sharkeez in Hermosa Beach hosted the team's
Victory Party where team members were congratulated by a throng of adoring
fans (or was that a "thong" of adoring fans)?

Part of Team Sharkeez
arrived early in the morning.

Team Beer pretty
much swam the 6.2 miles.

Nearly 10,000 people
enjoyed a warm but beautiful sunny SoCal day.
