Dining in Toronto
Patios are prime
real estate on nice days – especially at Al Frisco's.
Toronto is renowned for its outstanding
restaurants. And for good reason.
Finding good food is about as easy as picking a place and sitting
down at a table. Menus are usually posted for viewing and there's no
pesky doorman attempting to lure you inside. Just about everywhere you
go, it's good, if not fantastic.
Some of the best spots are the outdoor cafes located on King, Queen
and John streets. Often, the choice depends on the type of food
one is seeking. King Street at John, in fact, is a series of small cafes
ranging from New Orleans to French to the uniquely-named "Fred's
Not Here," so named because so many people used to call the
place looking for the absent owner he finally decided to formerly announce
the fact that he's not there. All are good, and we particularly enjoy
La Saint Tropez for its good French food without a French
attitude.
PubClub's favorite spot is Al Fresco's on John Street. The outdoor
patio is good for lunch and a great social spot for dinner or just a
tall cold Molson and an appetizer. This is a favorite spot for locals.
One will be hard-pressed to find a better food value in town. Unless
it's across the street at Milestone's, which also has a popular
patio and bar. And then there's Montana's, with its tasty wood-fired
pizza.
Outstanding seafood is just around the corner on Adalaide Street at
Alice Fazooli's Italian Crabshack Saloon. Go for the Low Country
Shrimp Boil, a dish stolen from South Carolina that combines crab, shrimp
and other shellfish in a pot with new potatoes and corn.
Little Italy, along College Street, is full of very good restaurant/bars.
Most have patios and some are good for drinks as well as dinner. People
tend to dress classy in this area and in classic European style, the
places are still serving dinner past midnight. GreekTown is open
late and is especially lively after the bars close at 2 a.m.
For an elegant atmosphere, and a little jazz afterward, locals head
to the Senator Steakhouse (Dundas and Victoria). As the
name implies, it specializes in steak, but all entrees are first-rate.
Upstairs is a classy jazz bar very popular among after-dinner patrons
as well as the nightclub crowd.
