Head Coach, School Have Reportedly Reached Buyout Agreement
LSU is on the verge of firing head football coach Les Miles, according to several media reports. He and the school have reportedly discussed a buyout that would end his 11-year tenure in Baton Rouge.
The Bengal Tigers have lost three straight games, a spiral that began when it was dominated by Alabama 30-16. Since then, LSU has lost consecutive games to Arkansas and Ole Miss, promoting speculation that MIles is about to be fired by the school.
One beat writer even said “it’s just a matter of time.”
If this happens, it would be a big mistake by the school.
Miles is a proven winner, was National Coach of the Year as recently as 2011, is a big-time recruiter who has put more players in the NFL than any other school and is a colorful character who draws a lot of positive media attention to the school.
So he has trouble beating Nick Saban.
The big issue here is, who else are you going to get, LSU? There are not many proven top-caliber coaches out there to be hired. Are you gambling that Jimbo Fisher would return to Baton Rouge?
If LSU fires Miles, “you better hire Knute Rockne” said SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum.
Also consider the landscape – college football is full of coaching openings, including the marquee job at USC. Plus, LSU has another highly-ranked recruiting class committed under Miles and Leonard Fournette has another year in the distinctive yellow helmet.
LSU seems intent on sending Miles out of the bayou but this could be a mistake that could cost the team for years to come in the future.
