Empty Bars Part Of The Southern California Lifestyle
These are two words that are echoing around Los Angeles as I type this blog post.
It’s a Saturday afternoon transforming into a Saturday night and I’m bored. Worse yet, I know I’ll be bored tonite, as well.
That’s because it’s raining in L.A. And when it rains in Los Angeles, nobody goes out to the bars. We stay at home and do the kinds of meaningless tasks that we ignore for the rest of the year – fix the blinking light on the microwave, rearrange the sock drawer, that kind of thing.
Oh we try to motivate. It’s not our nature to sit still here; we’re used to being out, being active and joining up with friends for dinner, drinks, seeing live music or downing drinks in the bars.
But not when it’s raining. Not even on a Saturday night.
Just for kicks, I took a walk down the normally active Pier Plaza, a place lined with bars in Hermosa Beach. Not one soul was in any of the bars. It was as if somebody had taken a broom and swept everybody into their houses and apartments.
As a result, the thought of going out tonite is too painful to contemplate. I can’t get convince any friends to move off the couch and I don’t want to spend a Saturday night drinking alone in an empty bar.
But I can deal with it. I know it’s a temporary situation. After this weekend in early April, it’s not likely to rain again until November. Maybe even December.
It’s reassuring to know there are several full bar weekends ahead of me.
