Shade Manhattan Beach Sunday Skydeck Party Review

Rooftop Poolside Bring A Bit Of Vegas Hipness To The South Bay

By Kevin Wilkerson, PubClub.com Blogger and South Bay Resident

Shade Manhattan Beach Skydeck Sunday Party
The poolside party is a modern version of Manhattan Beach’s Sunday party history.

The old 12th Street or H20 it’s not, and it’s certainly nothing like the days of LaPaz.

But the summer rooftop parties at the Skydeck in Shade Hotel give Manhattan Beach just what it needs – a modern touch to its glorious Sunday afternoon summertime past.

Each first Sunday in June, July and August from 1 p.m.-dusk, Shade allows non-guests access to its pool, which is a couple floors above its Zinc Lounge and has a view overlooking the town out to the Pacific Ocean. The event has been such a hit that it’s been extended into September.

The scene is a hip one – soft nightclub music coming from a DJ, a bartender mixing $12-15 cocktails, people looking cool while trying not to fall into the pool – that drew a surprisingly large number of people for its debut in June.

Balls fill up the pool so people are poolside for the Shade Skydeck Sunday party.

It was a surprisingly large number of people because it was the first one plus it was on a fog-soaked full-on June Gloom weekend in the South Bay.

Yet the pool deck was about 80% full with probably around 75 people, standing or sitting on the edge of the pool or on a cabana-style area around it. At first glance it looked just like a mini (very mini) Rehab in Vegas.

There was only one person in the pool, and that was a child of about 3, obviously belonging to a guest.  This led to two questions I cannot answer, at least yet, one being are adults allowed into the pool?

It’s certainly discouraged, for the pool surface is covered in balls.

If you’re wondering what to wear, tank tops and board shorts are it for the guys. Girls can wear whatever they like, of course, but bikinis are welcome tho light sundresses seem to be more popular.

As far as the crowd, it’s the more sophisticated champagne and wine mind among the women. Some of the men have that “cool Vegas lounger” look while others seem to like showing off their muscles and tattoos. But us beer regular drinkers fit in just fine, too (I just hope Shade gets its tap of Kona Longboard figured out; that’s been a problem my last two visits).

The age range is 25-45 plus, with most falling into the “hip” late 20s and early to mid 30s.

The next rooftop poolside party is Sunday, Aug. 7 with the final one on Sunday of Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 4 .

Maybe it WILL be a bit like 12th Street and LaPaz after all.

Address: 1221 N. Valley Drive, Manhattan Beach, CA
