One of the most fun activities to go in Greece is to rent mopeds.

Especially in Santorini, where you can zip all around the island, stop at gorgeous spots along the roads overlooking the cliffs where rental cars can’t go and buses do not go, and in general having the  freedom to just hop on one and go when the mood strikes you.

But there’s a few things to know before you go, and PubClub.com provides these five tips based on our experiences riding mopeds in the Greek Islands. Note that you will have to present and possibly leave your driver’s license with the business and different vehicles have different license requirements.

1.) Check Around And Compare Prices

There are tons of places that rent moped on the islands, so spend a couple of hours your first day comparing them, the prices, selection, location, etc. This may sounds like a tedious, time-consuming chore but it’s quite the opposite – you get to walk around a bit, get to know the area and talk with a bunch of locals and other travelers, and not just about mopeds. Also check with your hotel, for the owner may have a cousin who rents bikes and you’ll get a discount for staying at his place. Daily rates for mopeds in the high season on Santorini are about $20/day, tho most places offer discounts for muliople-day rental, which includes insurance.

2.) Get A Bike You’re Comfortable Riding

Stay in your league. Don’t try and be all macho and get the biggest bike if you’re not anything but an expert rider. If you’re a novice – and I certainly was the first time I rented a moped – then get something small.

3.) Be Safe

Riding mopeds in Greece can be dangerous but you should have no issues as long as you’re smart and always aware of your surroundings. Be careful along cliffs as some roads have pebbles on them and you can lose control without warning, don’t be holding out the selfie stick when riding, watch out for big vehicles that come screaming down narrow streets and use you common sense.

4.) Make Note Of The Location Of The Gas Stations

This may seem a silly tip but it’s not, because there are only a few places to get gas on the islands and if you get low or even run out while on the other side of the island, then you’re in for a really long and challenging day.

5.) Always Remember Where You Parked Which Moped Is Yours

Seriously. You’re hardly on the only moped on the island and there are likely to be dozens and dozens of them parked when you pull up to some place. And in several different spots near where you sto. So make sure you remember exactly where you parked and which one is your moped.

Good luck and enjoy! But before renting, read this article about my moped experiences in Greece.
