Teams Will Play In Coliseum & StubHub Center Thru 2019
All that rain has delayed the opening of the new stadium being built for the LA Rams and Los Angeles Chargers until 2020. It was originally scheduled to open for the 2019 season. This means the Rams will play one additional year at the LA Coliseum while the Chargers – fresh up from San Diego – will spend two years in the soccer stadium, StubHub Center in Carson.
Los Angeles International Airport received 15.4 inches of rain from November through February, more than twice the average amount or rainfall. There was so much rain that at times, the hole dug for the stadium was filled with 15 feet of water.
“The continuing rains really knocked us for a loop,” Bob Aylesworth, principal in charge for the Turner/AECOM Hunt joint venture that is building the stadium, told Los Angeles Times. “It was a very unforgiving two months for the project. And speaking from a building perspective, it really couldn’t have come at a worse time.”
At least the Rams are in a large facility – tho they had better do better than 4-12 to keep fans interested in the team – while they wait on the new stadium to be built. The Coliseum holds more than 90,000 while the StubHub’s capacity is just 27,000. The Chargers were hoping that the smaller venue would help build a tight, loyal base of local fans for a year, but now they are forced to play in the soccer stadium for another year.
The new stadium, which will have an adjacent performance center, will have a capacity of 70,240.
The Super Bowl, originally scheduled to be played there in 2021, has been moved to 2022.
