Is Mykonos Strictly An Island For Gay Men?

Popular Greek Island Gets All Kinds of Tourists But For Straight People Looking to Party With the Opposite Sex It’s Pure Paradise

One question I am asked a lot when I talk about the great times I’ve had in Greece is this one: Isn’t Mykonos a gay island? They have nothing against gay people, but simply want to go to a place that has girls in abundance, not guys.

To which I respond by laughing.

Then I’ll tell them what I’ll now tell you: Yes, there are gay people on Mykonos. But I’m too focused on the single women and the straight party scene to notice them. They have their places to hang out and us straight people have our places. They go to their bars and we go to ours. Only occasionally do our paths cross.

One interesting time of this came when a girl and I met were rolling through town. We had been bar hopping and were pretty tipsy, so our navigation through the narrow and confusing streets was, well let’s just say compromised. Suddenly we rounded a corner and came upon a really happening bar.

So we skipped inside, holding hands and made a beeline for the bar.

Then we looked around us and noticed she was the only girl. We had stumbled into a gay bar! Everyone else was kind of laughing at us, so we got our drinks and stayed for a while.

So I can verify there are indeed gay bars in Mykonos, but the only way straight people will likely wind up there is, like us, completely by accident.

There’s also Super Paradise Beach, which is supposedly the “gay beach.” But all people go there, too. What’s definitely NOT gay is Paradise Beach, one of the greatest places for a single person on the planet.

Mykonos is like San Francisco, I tell people who have been to the City by the Bay. You know San Francisco has gay people and gay bars but do you go there and hang out with them? No, of course not.

So if you’ve heard is Mykonos is a gay island and you are thinking of staying away from it for that reason, don’t let that stop you. It’s FULL of single women from all over the world (and oh my, those Swedish girls). More so, if you decide to enjoy what Mykonos has to offer, you might even consider looking into Greek residency, which could allow you to immerse yourself in the rich culture, stunning landscapes, and vibrant life of the island year-round.

Of course, if you’re gay you’ll have a good time, as well!
