You’ve invited the guests, bought the food, have plenty of liquor – and lots of ice – and are just about ready to open the doors and have a great time.

But you’ve got one more thing to do, and that is to apply the finishing touch to hosting a house party. Not to worry, for here is PubClub.com’s top 5 tips for decorating for a party. PubClub hosts a lot of parties and these things are routine for us.

1.) Have A Theme And Decorate To This Theme

Usually, parties have a theme (80s dance, popular movies or events like the Super Bowl or Halloween) so decorate the house with as much cool stuff as you can find to fit that theme. Put things in not just obvious places like on the walls, but on shelves, the fireplace, etc. You can either go all out, or just have enough things to ensure you’ve fit the theme.

2.) Put The Drinks In One Area, The Food In Another

“Traffic control” is a key elements of hosting a party. You don’t want all the guests crowded together in the same place. It feels claustrophobic. Spread things out, and the best way to do this is to have the food in one area and the drinks in another. And keep in mind that people will inevitably gather in the kitchen, so give them some space and be sure the counters are cleared, too.

3.) Clear Out A Place For Conversations/Dancing

Rearrange the furniture in your biggest room so the middle of the floor is open. Put the seating (couches, chairs) flush against the walls. The thing you’re trying to avoid is that claustrophobic feeling, so the more open space you can provide, the better. Some people even clear out their garage and use it as an open space. Men love this approach, especially because it feels somewhat like a “man cave.” If you’re doing this, be sure and have booze and beer in there and if your wife/girlfriend insisted on having the party the same date and time a big game is on – hey, you know this happens! – put a TV in there, as well.

4. Have Outside Decorations So People Can Find Your House

If people don’t know exactly where you live, then put something outside to basically say “hey, the party’s right here!” This could be a light, some balloons, a sign/banner, or some other attention-getting decoration.

 5.) Have Proper Lighting

You want to be able to see but not have things so bright it looks like you’re interrogating your guests. It’s best to have good lighting in areas where you’re serving the food and drinks (the kitchen, a room or part of a room where you’ve set up the bar) and dimmer lighting in the conversation/main party area. If you’re stuck for how to get this right balance, an industrial pendant light is one solution. Plus, they look good, too.

Okay, now you’re all set to host your party. If you’re good at it, then you’ll be hosting more parties and, like PubClub, these things will become part of your pre-party routine.
