Georgia Has #1 Class With Alabama & Ohio State In Hot Pursuit Of More Talent
Most of the hold-your-breath, we’ve-got-to-have-this-guy college football recruits declared for their school back in December.
But the regular National Signing Day – always around the second Wednesday of February – still has significance for the top teams.
Signing high school players is the lifeblood of college programs. You can’t win without talent. And the talent comes from National Signing Day.
Except in 2017-18 when an early signing period was established in mid-December. Most of the top players signed during this time, seemingly taking some steam out of the traditional February day.
Still, several key players remain and ranked recruiting classes will be adjusted to their final rankings after all players are signed by the schools. Alabama, for instance – the king of recruiting with an incredible five consecutive #1 classes – could leap all the way from sixth to second.
Georgia, rich in talent and with a coach who recruited that state well when with Alabama, has the #1 class.
There’s still several top players out there at key positions – quarterback, wide receiver, offensive and defensive lines – that could determine which teams play the College Football playoffs the next two to three seasons. These key recruits can either be instant starters or provide much-needed depth at key positions.
Fans need to pay attention to this National Signing Day. It’s still significant. It still means a lot to building a championship team. And while a school like Alabama, Georgia or Ohio State can absorb not getting that “key” player or two, other schools looking to build a program like Texas or Tennessee, need this day to get every good player they can on campus.
So fans are advised to pay attention to what happens on National Signing Day. It’s televised by ESPN, so maybe treat it like a little March Madness preparation for checking out the results out of the watchful eyes of your boss at work.
