Grasslands Meatery & Eatery Serves Good Southern-Style Barbeque In California

I could smell the BBQ the moment I walked into the place. The distinctive flavor filled up the air and had me salivating in anticipation of a tasty meal.
And I went all out, too. I had the ribs (big, thick and really good), the brisket, Pecana Churrasco, even the roasted chicken and New Orleans Shrimp.
I was not in North Carolina, Texas, Kansas City or Memphis. Or even Tuscaloosa.
I was in Anaheim.
California.
Next to Disneyland.
The location was Grasslands BBQ & Churrasco Meat Market, and if you think that’s a mouthful, then get a load of some of its BBQ for yourself. You’ll be doing a lot more chewing than talking.
The concept is a Brazilian BBQ restaurant but instead of being the traditional churrascaria in which servers bring out meat on skewers they slice at the table and keep bringing it until you turn a device from green to red to “stop,” this reminded me more of a Southern barbeque joint.

The ribs certainly did; they are called St. Louis Pork Ribs on the menu and resembled what the serve at the standard for all BBQ places in my opinion, Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, AL. The taste was nearly as good, too. That’s high praise.

Normally, when I’m in California, I forget all about getting good Southern-style barbeque. I know there are a few rib joints around here, but it’s hardly worth the drive. Instead, I’ve become a fan of the no-sauce but excellent California BBQ cuisine of tri-tip.
But with ribs like this, it’s like, well, Disneyland, to get a taste of the South in L.A.
Oh, and there’s also a location in Palo Alto (wonder if Stanford people go there before and after games the way Bama fans do Dreamland in Tuscaloosa?) and Vegas.
