No More Of The Signature Drinks At The Airport In The Sky – What!?
The frothy drink with the whipped cream topper has been playing in my head like a Jimmy Buffett song.
Actually, it’s more like an Eric Stone song; Eric sings a lot of tunes like Jimmy and has one that mentions this non-frozen concoction: “too many Buffalo Milks…”
The reason it’s on my mind is that I’ve been this close to having one but, like that girl who keeps slipping away just when you think you’ve got her, it has escaped my grasp.
You see, the Buffalo Milk is a speciality drink and there’s only one place to get it, and that’s where it was created, on Catalina Island off the Southern California coast. Being an island, it’s not like you can Uber to the place; you have to take a ferry (one hour, $70 round-trip) or know someone with a plane to fly there to its tiny “Airport In The Sky” and get it.
Well I happen to know someone with a plane and we went there to get it. Except we didn’t get it.
For starters, pilot Rob Devers, PubClubette Ashley and myself took off one day but were tuned back by cloud cover. Then, on another day just as we approached the island, a cloud hovered over the airport like a helicopter. It did move out of our way just enough for us to land and when we got to the tiny restaurant – which is known primarily for its Buffalo Burger – we were told that not only was grill was broken (thus, no Buffalo Burgers) but that the airport no longer serves Buffalo Milks.
Like pirates at Two Harbors for Buccaneer Days we let out in unison a big “arggggg!”
I felt especially bad for Ashley, who has been to Catalina but once and had never heard of the Buffalo Milk, let alone ever had one. She even made the effort to look up the recipe (myself, I really don’t want to know what’s in it; I have the same philosophy about another Southern California signature drink, the Fire Chief at Old Tony’s in Redondo Beach).
Ashley wants one now so bad she talked about making some for Rob and myself now that she has the recipe. And that would be great, but signature drinks are best enjoyed in their signature locations.
Perhaps this is just a sign that my other friend, Kegger, should go ahead and buy that sailboat he’s been eyeing of late. That way we can sail over to Two Harbors and have all the Buffalo Milks we can digest.
I had better warn DeWitt at the bar ahead of time, tho, because we may be going through quite a few of them.
I left Catalina without even thinking,
Had been like a lizard drinking,
Too many Buffalo Milks were hurtin’ my head…
