Travel Blogger Daily Blog: Why I Love Walking In New Orleans

NOLA Is A Great City For Pedestrian Sightseeing

One of my favorite ways to explore when traveling is by using my feet.

Walking while traveling is the ideal way to get around a city or destination. You get to see things up close, at your own pace (well, except in New York City where you will get trampled if you stop to pause) and experience true feel for the culture and pace of a place.

That’s why I love walking around New Orleans so much. You get all three of those things and especially the latter, for it doesn’t take long to realize what drives the culture in Nawlens.

It’s music. Live music. And that is everywhere in New Orleans. There are musicians playing on the street for tip money, musicians playing jazz and blues in open-air areas such as the French Market and of course bands blasting rock cover tunes out of nearly every bar on Bourbon Street.

This never fails to put a bounce in my step and it’s a constant reminder that I’m – yeah! – back in New Orleans.

Of course, in the Big Easy one doesn’t need musical reminders to know where you are because visual cues are everywhere. Especially in the French Quarter, which is the best place for walking in New Orleans.

First is the distinctive architecture, the two- and three-story brick buildings with those black railings on the balconies. Then there’s the one-after-another blur of beads shops, restaurants and bars.

These are mostly small one-room joints and there’s so many of them it can be bit intimidating to the newcomer but know this: if you did down at a place to eat it’s going to be good and each one has its own individual take on gumbo.

New Orleans also has one distinct advantage that few other cities in America can match, and that is the fact that you can walk around with a beer. Or a cocktail. Or one of those crazy concoctions such as a Hurricane or a Hand Grenade. This is cheap, too; several places have beers to go for just $2.

What’s better than being able to walk around a place with a drink in your hand? That’s sightseeing PubClub.com style!

So there’s a lot to like about walking around New Orleans.

I will give you a warning, tho – don’t wander out of the French Quarter toward I-10. Things can get a bit dicey in a hurry.

Cheers!
