Here’s something you should definitely do when you are visiting Los Angeles: go to a comedy club.

There’s a lot of them, most famously the Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip and The Improv. At the latter, I once saw Jerry Seinfield just hanging out, and this was at a time when the “Seinfield” show had only been on the air for a year or two.

Comedy clubs are different than any other type of entertainment because at any moment, you could become part of the comedian’s act. They could point to you, ask you a question or involve you in their routine. So you always have to be on alert – or risk being embarrassed in front of everyone.

It had been a while, tho, since I had been to a comedy club and when I ran into a friend who said he would be performing at the Comedy & Magic Club here in Hermosa Beach, I jumped at the opportunity to see him.

The friend, a fellow travel journalist, Mike Siegel of Travel Tales Podcast, doubles as a comedian. He performs a lot on cruise ships and now here he was in PubClub.com’s backyard.

So I went with PubClubette Ashley and a private pilot friend who had just flown us to Catalina Island, to go to the show.

“Gee, I hope I’m funny,” Mike said beforehand.

“Don’t worry,” I replied. “We’ve been drinking.’

As it turned out, this was a comedian showcase, featuring a rapid-fire lineup of 11 comedians in two hours. Mike was the second-to-last and ahead of him were performers who have been on the Tonite Show, HBO and Comedy Central. One is a writer for Conan O’Brien.

What a great time it was, too. Mike told a few jokes about how old people are on the Alaska cruises – “one of the excursions is burial at sea,” he cracked – and overall just being in a comedy club was a thrill. The show opened with an emcee who warmed up the sold-out audience with a few jokes, then we were handed a variety of comedians, including one who juggled knives while doing his routine.

Some comedians poked fun at the audience, others had various deliveries and one looked like Jack Black who had not shaved or had a haircut in about a year.

But the most entertaining part of it was just being there – being in a room with people laughing together in that cool atmosphere of a comedy club.

When you’re in LA, take advantage of this great entertainment option.

Or, if you’re on a cruise ship when Mike is performing, be sure and catch his act.

Cheers!
