Hangin’ Loose In Hermosa Beach

It was a quiet Monday and my day was winding down when a friend messages me saying she was in the area.
My reaction was immediate: “Come on over! I have wine.”
A few minutes later, we were on the deck, having some wine and just enjoying a late Southern California afternoon. The timing was perfect. She arrived just as the sun was making its visual decent across the beach and into the Pacific Ocean.
We caught up on a few things but mainly we just sat outside and watched the sunset. We did not really say a lot and sometimes, moments don’t need any words. You only need the moments.
Our location was The Strand in Hermosa Beach, a picture-perfect place in Southern California, and between us and the sunset were people riding by on bicycles. Even the seagulls were into it; hundreds of them landed on the sand by the water’s edge to enjoy nature’s scene evolving in front of us.
The sunset was spectacular. The sky turned orange and the beach volleyball net and lifeguard stand darkened against the horizon.
After the sun went down, my friend and I just sat there, unable to move, for another hour. The post-sunset glow was amazing; the beauty just seemed to get better and better with every passing moment.
In the sky, the sun was replaced by the lighted dots of airplanes taking off from nearby LAX. There were also a few stationary lights over Malibu; these were the news helicopters showing traffic on Pacific Coast Highway, which was closed for repairs due to the recent Malibu fires.
All the while, my friend and I sat there watching the scene. The only time I moved was to get up to fill up our wine glasses.
I realized that sometimes, you’re better off staying put rather than trying to move around all the time, for great moments can be happening right in front of you. And when you’re traveling, keep this in mind because you don’t always have to be traveling – in other words, alway being on the go – to see the best in a destination.
Cheers!
