Why It’s Still Hard To Believe In LSU, Despite Winning The National Championship

Still Waiting For The Tigers To Play Like They Are Coached By Coach O

They have set all kinds of offensive records, their quarterback has gone from nobody to the Heisman Trophy winner (and deservedly so) and the defense showed some nasty ferocity in winning the National Championship.

But I still don’t trust LSU. And here’s why: I find it impossible to believe any team coached by Edward James Orgeron Jr. – Coach O – could actually win the title, even if it happened in dominating fashion over Clemson.

After all, this is a guy that went 10-25 at Ole Miss and didn’t win a conference game his last season. He was an abysmal failure. He was Lane Kiffin’s fraternity boy of shame at Tennessee, and while he went 6-1 at USC, he was regarded as a good interim coach but not full-time head coaching material.

Heck, even LSU didn’t want him. They got stuck with him when they didn’t get Jimbo Fisher (not the worst thing that could happen to a school, by the way) and he was on the hot seat every year.

Until this year.

Everything tuned on a dime.

He (or someone) hired Joe Brady from the New Orleans Saints and suddenly LSU’s offense went from pathetic to prolific. After years of being at least a decent quarterback away from being, well, what they are now, they have Joe Burrow who rose up and reached his full potential.

Here is what I think: Coach O realized his weaknesses and the fact that he has his dream job. So he put his ego on the sideline with a headset to pretend he was coaching, but let his assistants actually do all the coaching.

He realized his strength is in speeches and motivating the players, and entertaining the media with that rocks-in-the-mouth, what-the-heck-did-he-say voice. Always finished with a “geaux Tigers.”

As long as he continues to do this – and the Tigers had a layup on the semifinals against Oklahoma – then LSU may well win a National Championship. But if he goes against the cagy Dabo Swinney for the title then, as Lee Corso likes to say, “no so fast.”
