Why Tua Tagovailoa Declaring For NFL Draft Is Good For Alabama Football

Arrival Of Bryce Young & Emergence Of Mac Jones Has Crimson Tide Fully Stoked At QB

There was some sadness in Tuscaloosa and throughout the state (except for one particular spot) as Tua Tagovailoa announced his intention to enter the 2020 NFL Draft.

After all, the quarterback from Hawaii did things people had never seen before and punctuated it with his remarkable Second-and-26 throw to win a National Championship.

But him leaving is not such a bad thing and in fact, here’s why Tagovailoa going to the NFL is actually good for Alabama football.

The Crimson Tide Is Loaded At Quarterback

If Tua had stayed, Alabama would have a real logjam at quarterback. There would be the obvious leader to start, but there’s also the emerge of Mac Jones – he seems to be developing as an A.J.  McCarron-type, one who is a good game manager with big-play potential – Tua’s little brother Tauila and the former 4-star recruit nobody’s taking about, Paul Tyson.

And then there’s Bryce Young who, based on his ability and football acumen could very well step in and start the first game against USC (although it didn’t exactly work out too well for the previous Alabama quarterback from Southern California who started the opener against the Trojans).

Tauila Tagovailoa

If Tua came back and Tauila got smothered on the depth chart, what would become of the latter? He didn’t play at all in the Auburn and Michigan games – is he not ready or not in the same league as his brother? This would have made for an interesting and potentially awkward situation between the Tagovailoa family and Nick Saban.

College Football’s ‘Instant Transfer’ Rule

This is the biggest reason why Tua leaving is good for Alabama football. And not just for the 2020 season but beyond that and into the future.

College football’s “instant transfer” rule in which a player can leave and start immediately at another school (Justin Fields) means that Young – knowing he would be behind Tua and maybe even Jones, too – might just decide to leave Bama. And if he’s anywhere as good as he’s projected to be, that would hurt the Tide for the next two seasons.

And maybe, with little to no playing time, Tauila also would have decided to transfer.

Tua will be missed by fans, coaches and players but his departure to the NFL could turn out to be better for Alabama football than if he had stayed in Tuscaloosa.
