There are many wineries scattered around the golden hillsides of Paso Robles in the midsection of the Golden State. But you don’t have to get in your car – or draw straws to determine your designated driver – to do wine tasting in this Central California town near Hearst Castle.

That’s because Paso Robles has as many tasting rooms downtown as the region has grape varieties. You can walk from one to another and another (and another and even another, as I did one sunny afternoon) and then go back to your hotel room to collect your wits before going out to dinner.

There are 13 winery tasting rooms from A-P (hey it rhymes with Z) in downtown Paso, as locals call it. They surround City Park, a small park surrounded on three sides by small restaurants and shops the way vines surround grapes.

The downtown wine tasting rooms are not on massive, manicured grounds in country estate-type of buildings like you get at the actual wineries. But they are nice and conveniently located and besides not having to drive, are so close to one another you can visit several in a short amount of time.

I stayed right across the street at the Paso Robles Inn, a nice hotel with a classic look (lots of brick with a country porch and landscaped walkways to the rooms) with very classy and comfortable rooms. And at pretty good rates, too, in the $200 range during peak season, $150 or less at other times.

Another downtown hotel is The Piccolo. The Holiday Inn Express is about a mile from downtown, which is not a bad walk. Yes, there are limited options so book early to be sure you can get a room.

So armed with all this information, are you ready to do some wine tasting? Here’s where to do it in downtown Paso.
