Don’t you just hate it when you go into a bar, a band is set up but they do more “testing, testing” than playing?

Well drink up because they always suck.

Just like a girl, the more a band teases, the worst they are when they finally, well, take the stage. You’re in the bar, sipping your beer or cocktail to determine if they are worth hanging around for and then when they finally start to play your instantly realize you should have had a lot more beers or drinks.

I point this out because I was recently in a new – new to me, anyway, since i just moved to the area – local bar wanting to hear the band. I arrived at 10 p.m., on a Saturday night and they were set up, tho by this time I expected them to be halfway into their first set.

Soon after my arrival, the drummer stated pounding his set, usually a sign for the other band members to finish whatever they are consuming and come out from wherever they have been hiding to get on stage.

The guitar player took the cue, put the strap over his shoulder and played a few cords. The he unstrapped, the drummer left and there was no band. This was repeated three times over the next half an hour.

Finally, the entire band emerged and played a song that lasted about as long as a teenager does during his first sexual encounter. You got it, about a minute.

Dudes!? You’re not the freakin’ Rolling Stones! Just take the stage and start playing your music!!!

It was not until about 11 that they opened their first set (the bar is in California which means it has to close by 2 a.m., so it’s not like this was New York or London where things don’t really get cranking until around midnight) and my first reaction upon finally hearing the band play was, “dang. I should have had more a few more beers.”

You see, this was one of the typical “the more you drink the better they sound” bar bands.

Somehow I knew this would be the case because the longer a band makes you wait – building the anticipation like rock stars at a major concert – the more disappointing they are when they actually perform.

So my message to these bands is this: hey crappy bar band, you’re not the Rolling Stones so just go ahead and play. If we like you we’ll hang around and put money in your tip jar. Otherwise, we will leave frustrated and if ever see you playing at that or another bar, it’s highly doubtful we will stay.
