USA Triathlon has launched a multisport initiative for athletes to resume workouts and events to again be staged. The so-called Safe Return To Multisport Initiative is divided into three phases: Phased Approach to Return to Racing, Personal Health & Safety When Preparing To Train and Compete Again, and Navigating Race Week.

The stated objective is “to provide guidelines for a safe return to multisport racing and training using a three-phased approach.”

Rocky Harris, USA Triathlon CEO, explained the initiative this way. “As the governing body for triathlon and multisport in this country, it is essential that USA Triathlon takes a leadership role in developing and disseminating information to guide a consistent and unified approach toward reopening our sport to the public,” he said.

“We have worked with some of the top experts in the world to develop these guidelines to offer clarity for event directors, athletes and the community at large, and to provide the tools for all constituents to be able to prioritize safety above all else in training and racing.”

In Phase I, there will  be no live competitions, only virtual racing. Training for the running and biking disciplines can occur only if there are no packs; social distancing must be maintained at all times. Swimming can take place where local waters are open.

Competitions are allowed in Phase II, but only in accordance with local social-distancing rules. Phase III allows for the full resumption of events with no restrictions on the size of event and number of participants.

“USA Triathlon has worked diligently to create a plan for safe return to multisport training and racing that is line with national medical guidelines,” said Dr. Andrew Getzin, USA Triathlon Volunteer Medical Chair. “The value of physical activity for overall wellness cannot be overstated, nor can the passion of our members to the multisport lifestyle. We want to encourage individual and community wellness by progressing individual training and racing activities incrementally. While USA Triathlon’s plan is a strong starting point to progress in a way that keeps participants, volunteers, and communities safe from undue risk of infection, we ask that everybody stays nimble and flexible as more data around COVID-19 potentially emerges.”

As part of the initiative, USA Triathlon has also developed the Return to Racing Recommendations fro Race Directors, which is included in the the multisports guidelines document.

USA Triathlon sanctions more than 4,300 events each year across the nation.

When this sport and other sports getting back to competition, then  sport betting in the USA can resume, too.
