Fireworks Shows Canceled Or Curtailed Across The USA For 4th Of July
In a year that seems lost, the Fourth of July celebrations in the USA for 2020 will turn out to be like a firework that fails to explode: a dud.
That’s because public celebrations around the country have either been canceled or put on such restrictions that national, state and local officials would prefer for everyone to stay at home.
The Macy’s annual Fourth of July fireworks in New York City, for instance, will only last for about five minutes. And they evening(s) they take place aren’t even being announced to the public. The idea is to keep groups of from gathering to watch them.
In San Diego, the bayfront fireworks – which attracts as many as 750,000 people – have been canceled.
The White House has planned a fireworks display over the National Mall on Independence Day but Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser wants people to stay home. “We hope that the crowds that come in non-pandemic years won’t materialize this year,” he said.
Thinking of going to a beach for the 4th? Think again. Texas and Florida have seen a spike in coronavirus cases (to be fair, testing has increased, too) and that has led the states to either shut the bars (Texas) or ban alcohol sales in bars (Florida).
Heck, the mayor of Miami announced that beaches in that city, including its famous South Beach, will be closed the entire Independence Day weekend.
And even if it were to happen, who would want to go to Seattle right now for its traditional 4th fireworks show?
Some cities are having fireworks shows, such as Los Angeles and Houston’s Shell Freedom Over Texas without people, instead having them air on local TV stations.
Overall, this year’s celebration is truly a dud in a dud year.
