If there’s one thing that makes me happy, it’s a party.
And walking into a party that I did not even know existed is sometimes an even better experience. Especially when that party is a pub crawl that has packed a bar with fun people that had the place absolutely jamming. Even with several big college football games on the TVs, it was the pub crawl that made things so lively.
This was the place to be on this day, and I was there.
“All you need to be happy,” a friend told me, “is a pub crawl, girls in Daisy Duke shorts and an Alabama football victory!”
He could not have been more correct.
I was in Hermosa Beach, CA, on a September Saturday for the Hermosa Open beach volleyball tournament, but it was readily apparent that the party scene was somewhere other than on the beach. It was by the beach at the bars along Pier Ave.
And at Patrick Molloy’s, I stumbled into the pub crawl. Actually, it was two pub crawls, both of them alumni from Loyola Marymount University, and anyone who knows anything about LMU (or has been to Sharkeez in Manhattan Beach on a Thursday night), knows the Playa del Rey campus has some of the best-looking coeds of any school in the USA.
The place was jamming, the music was pumping and there were gorgeous girls everywhere. It was like walking into a beer commercial, which was perfect because I was drinking beer!
And, due to some phenomenal fashion trend that has entrenched itself in the Southern California beach cities like volleyball poles in the sand, half the girls were outfitted in those Daisy Dukes, the cut-off jeans shorts that make this Southerner’s temperature rise like a summer day in Tuscaloosa.
And speaking of T-Town, at the same time all this was happening, the Alabama Crimson Tide was not only beating the Arkansas Razorbacks but pounding them the way I was pounding down the beers, to the tune of 38-14. Plus, the Bud Light Lime girls were doing bar tours because of the Hermosa Open.
This was, quite simply, the perfect party storm.
And, to add further pleasure to the picture, just as the LMU crowd moved to another bar – we eventually caught up with them at Cafe Boogaloo – in walked another pair of Daisy Dukes. As she passed me she saw my Alabama shirt and said, in that distinctive accent that only Southern girls can produce, “Roaul Tide!” Turns out she was from South Carolina.
See what happens when you go out to the bars!? You just never know what you may find waiting for you.
