Fisherman’s Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars that go up and down steep hills, curvy Lombard Street, great restaurants and summertime street festivals.

This is San Francisco and it is a top travel destination in the USA.

But when are best months to visit San Francisco?

The joke is the line Mark Twain was said to have said: “the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco. That’s a bit of an urban myth, locals claim, but the point is clear: it’s not exactly warm and sunny in this city in the middle of summertime.

Despite this San Francisco is a great city to visit anytime but the absolute best months for the weather are May, September and October. Then, you will find warmth and sunshine and will get to see almost as many locals out as tourists.

July and August? Well those are sunny and warm months, as well, but when the fog rolls in off the bay at around 5 o’clock, then the temperature drops from a pleasant 75 to a chilly 55 within minutes.

Regardless of the month,

the weather cools at night and drops into the mid- to low-60s or even mid-to upper-50s. This is the case with pretty much any city along the coast in California. Locals know it’s wise to always have a light jacket or sweatshirt handy; you’ll see them “layer” clothes and tie them around the waist.

Here’s a breakdown of San Francisco’s climate and weather.

San Francisco’s Weather

Overall, the weather in San Francisco is pleasant on a year-round basis. Daytime temperatures are a mild 75 and it’s sunny most of the year. The temperatures fall to the 60s in the winter months and at all times of the year, can plunge into the 50s with a foggy chill at night.

It’s a good idea to pack a pair of jeans and a couple of sweaters/sweatshirts for any trip to what locals call “the City.”

San Francisco, like many places in California, has several microclimates. This means there are so many different areas – beaches, hills and mountains – that each has its own environment. Watch the local weather and you’ll see several different forecasts.

Across The Golden Gate Bridge The Weather Is Far Different Than In San Francisco

While some people are suddenly freezing in San Francisco in the summertime when the fog rolls in over the bay, those across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County are feeling pretty warm. In fact, it’s common for temperatures to reach into the 90s in the daytime.

But don’t be fooled – it can also get cool in a hurry along those little bay towns such as Sausalito and Tiburon.
